ANOMALY — Web3 Character Illustration & Character Design

The concept

This illustration began as an exploration of character identity and visual storytelling within the Web3 space. I wanted to create a character that felt visually distinct, expressive, and memorable—someone who could exist as more than just a standalone PFP.
The central character, Anomaly, was designed around a strong and unconventional visual identity. The character's appearance combines stylized proportions, expressive features, futuristic elements, and distinctive accessories to create a design that immediately captures attention.
Rather than focusing only on making the character visually appealing, I wanted the illustration to communicate personality, attitude, and a sense of individuality through character design.

Building the illustration

I started by establishing Anomaly's pose, silhouette, and overall presence within the composition. The goal was to make the character immediately readable while leaving enough room for the smaller design details to contribute to the personality.
From there, I developed the character's clothing, accessories, facial features, and other visual elements. Each part of the design was approached as an opportunity to reinforce Anomaly's identity and create a character that felt cohesive from head to toe.
The surrounding visual elements were developed to complement the character rather than compete with it. This allowed Anomaly to remain the primary focal point while still giving the illustration enough visual depth and personality.

Digital illustration approach

My approach focused on combining clean line work with stylized digital rendering.
Developed the character around a strong silhouette and expressive pose.
Used exaggerated proportions and distinctive features to create a recognizable character identity.
Designed the clothing and accessories to reinforce Anomaly's futuristic and unconventional aesthetic.
Used facial expression and body language to communicate personality without relying on text.
Built the color palette around strong contrasts to separate the character's different visual elements.
Added texture and painterly brushwork to move the piece beyond simple flat coloring.
Used highlights, shadows, and color variation to give the character more volume and material definition.
Refined the illustration through multiple rendering and detail passes to create a cohesive final character piece.

From sketch to final

01 — Character Exploration

The process began with exploring Anomaly's overall appearance, pose, proportions, and visual identity. At this stage, the priority was finding a silhouette and expression that could immediately communicate the character's personality.

02 — Line Art

Once the character design and composition were established, I developed the line work across the character. I focused on maintaining clean, expressive contours while preserving the smaller costume and accessory details.

03 — Color Development

I introduced the main color palette and began defining the different materials and visual sections of the character. The colors were selected to create contrast while keeping the overall design visually cohesive.

04 — Rendering

The rendering stage focused on developing Anomaly's volume, lighting, and material definition. I built up the character using shadows, highlights, texture, and subtle color variation across the clothing, skin, and accessories.

05 — Details & Visual Identity

I developed the smaller elements of the character to strengthen Anomaly's identity. Accessories, surface details, textures, and secondary visual elements were refined to make the character feel more complete and intentional.

06 — Final Polish

The final pass focused on bringing the entire illustration together through additional lighting adjustments, texture, shadow refinement, line cleanup, and small details across the character.

The final result

The finished illustration presents Anomaly as a distinctive Web3 character with a strong visual identity and room for further storytelling.
The biggest goal was to create a character that could immediately stand out while still feeling like part of a larger world. Through the combination of character design, expressive posing, color, rendering, and detailed visual elements, the illustration gives Anomaly a personality that extends beyond the image itself.
