The Impact of Excess Alcohol Consumption on Nigerian Youths.
I don’t drink alcohol. This has a thing with my beliefs, upbringing, and personal choices. The alcohol consumed in Nigeria have all been proven to be fake over time. In Nigeria, Azul is one of the most expensive drinks and over 100 bottles are sold in clubs every Friday. However, the world record has it: ‘Only 100 bottles of this particular brand of Azul “Clase Azul Ultra-Extra Anejo” are produced annually. “It is one of the world’s most-exclusive Tequila. Now, you are wondering where Nigerians get their own bottles of Azul from.
Excessive alcohol consumption among youths is a growing concern worldwide, with far-reaching consequences that impact individuals, families, and communities. While moderate use of alcohol may be socially accepted in many cultures, ( I have friends and colleagues who drink alcohol). The dangers associated with excessive drinking, especially in young people, are severe and multifaceted.
This article explores the effects of excessive alcohol consumption on youths, focusing on physical health, mental well-being, academic performance, and social behavior.
Physical Health Risks One of the most immediate and severe effects of excessive alcohol consumption is its impact on physical health. Alcohol can cause both short-term effects, such as lowered inhibitions, and long-term effects, including a weakened immune system. You won’t necessarily feel alcohol’s impact on your body right away, but it starts from the moment you take your first sip. If you drink, you’ve probably had some experience with alcohol’s effects, from the warm buzz that kicks in quickly to the not-so-pleasant wine headache, or the hangover that shows up the next morning. Since those effects don’t last long, you might not worry much about them, especially if you don’t drink often. Many assume the occasional beer or glass of wine at mealtimes or special occasions doesn’t pose much cause for concern. However, drinking any amount of alcohol can potentially lead to unwanted health consequences.
The developing bodies of adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of alcohol. Excessive drinking can lead to acute issues like alcohol poisoning, a potentially fatal condition that occurs when the alcohol levels in the bloodstream become too high.
In the long term, chronic heavy drinking can lead to liver damage, cardiovascular diseases, and an increased risk of certain cancers. These risks are even more pronounced for youths whose bodies are still developing. Alcohol can also interfere with the brain’s development, leading to cognitive impairments that may persist into adulthood. Alcohol causes changes in the function of the kidneys and makes them less able to filter the blood.
Mental Health Consequences
Excessive alcohol use is closely linked to various mental health issues among youths. Alcohol is a depressant that can exacerbate feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression. For young people already struggling with mental health issues, alcohol can act as a catalyst, worsening their condition and increasing the risk of self-harm or suicide.
Moreover, alcohol impairs judgement and can lead to risky behaviours, such as unprotected sex or driving under the influence. These behaviors not only have immediate dangers but can also lead to long-term psychological trauma. Behaving in a way they otherwise wouldn’t, potentially damaging their reputation. Moreover, alcohol impairs cognitive function, leading to impaired decision-making skills and memory deficiencies. This can significantly impact a person’s emotional well-being and further contribute to mental health struggles.
It is important to raise awareness about the interconnectedness of excessive alcohol consumption and mental health issues. By providing education, support, and alternative coping mechanisms, we can help prevent the negative impact of alcohol on mental health among youths.
Impact on Academic Performance Alcohol consumption can significantly impair a young person’s ability to perform academically. The cognitive impairments caused by alcohol affect memory, concentration, and decision-making skills, making it difficult for students to focus on their studies. This often results in poor grades, missed classes, and a decreased likelihood of academic success.
Additionally, the time spent drinking or recovering from a night of heavy drinking often takes away from time that could be spent studying or engaging in productive activities. Over time, this can lead to a downward spiral, where poor academic performance leads to increased stress, which in turn may lead to more drinking as a coping mechanism.
Social and Behavioral Effects
The social consequences of excessive alcohol consumption among youths are significant. Alcohol can alter behavior, leading to aggression, violence, and criminal activities. Young people under the influence are more likely to engage in fights, vandalism, and other forms of antisocial behavior, which can have lasting legal and social repercussions.
Furthermore, excessive drinking often leads to strained relationships with family and friends. The behavior of a young person who frequently drinks to excess can lead to conflicts and alienation, which may further drive them to drink, creating a vicious cycle.
Prevention and Intervention Addressing the issue of excessive alcohol consumption among youths requires a multifaceted approach. Education is crucial — young people need to be informed about the risks associated with alcohol and taught strategies to resist peer pressure. Parents and educators play a key role in this, providing guidance and setting clear expectations regarding alcohol use.
In addition to education, there is a need for accessible mental health services. Many young people turn to alcohol as a way to cope with stress, anxiety, or depression. Providing them with alternative coping mechanisms, such as counselling or support groups, can help reduce their reliance on alcohol.
Moreover, community and policy-level interventions are essential. This includes stricter enforcement of underage drinking laws, as well as community programs that offer safe, alcohol-free activities for young people.
Conclusion Excessive alcohol consumption among youths is a serious issue with profound effects on physical health, mental well-being, academic success, and social behavior. Addressing this problem requires a collective effort from individuals, families, communities, and policymakers. By providing education, support, and effective interventions, it is possible to reduce the prevalence of excessive drinking among young people and mitigate its harmful effects.
