Building an AI-Powered Sales & Support Workflow for Shopify

Overview

Yep AI is a Shopify app built to help merchants automate customer communication and improve sales support with AI. The platform learns from store data and brand context to answer customer questions, recommend products, handle order-tracking requests, and escalate to human support when needed.
I led the end-to-end development of the app, including the storefront widget, Shopify theme integration, merchant onboarding flows, multilingual response handling, order-status automation, external integrations, and analytics setup.

Goal

The main goal was to turn repetitive customer support and pre-purchase questions into a scalable, AI-assisted workflow that could improve response speed, reduce manual workload, and increase conversion opportunities.
From a business perspective, the product needed to do more than answer questions. It had to function as a sales assistant inside the storefront by helping shoppers discover the right products, receive instant support, and continue through the buying journey without friction.

What I Did

I built the app from the ground up as a Shopify-native solution that could connect deeply with store operations while remaining easy for merchants to install and configure.
My work included:
Building the storefront AI chat widget and Shopify theme integration
Developing the merchant admin experience using App Bridge and Polaris
Connecting Shopify Admin APIs for product, customer, and order context
Using Storefront API context to improve relevance on product pages
Implementing webhook-driven order update flows for automated order-status replies
Supporting multilingual responses for broader merchant usability
Integrating WhatsApp and Calendly so merchants could extend conversations beyond the storefront
Setting up analytics to track usage, response patterns, and merchant adoption

Workflow / System Design

One of the most important parts of the project was designing the app as a workflow system rather than a simple chatbot.
The AI layer needed structured access to:
product catalog data
order status and customer support scenarios
brand-specific tone and store context
escalation paths to humans when AI confidence was limited
This made the app more useful for real commerce operations. Instead of acting like a generic assistant, it became part of a repeatable customer communication system.
That same system-thinking is also highly relevant to broader AI-assisted marketing workflows: structured inputs, automated responses, human handoff, and measurable outcomes.

Challenges

The main challenge was balancing automation with trust and accuracy.
In commerce, responses cannot feel random or off-brand. Product recommendations, order support, and promotional replies all need to reflect store context correctly. The app also needed to work smoothly across modern Shopify themes and fit naturally into a merchant’s existing workflow.
Another challenge was designing the experience so merchants could actually adopt it quickly, rather than seeing it as a technically impressive but hard-to-manage tool.

Implementation

The app was built with Shopify-native architecture and modern app tooling:
Shopify Admin API (GraphQL & REST)
Storefront API
OAuth and GDPR webhooks
React-based admin UI with App Bridge + Polaris
webhook-driven automation for order updates
integrations for WhatsApp and Calendly
analytics instrumentation for product and usage insights

Result

The app launched successfully on the Shopify App Store and was built to support the latest Online Store 2.0 themes. It also included a free plan to lower adoption friction and help merchants test the value early.
Early merchant response was strong, with 5.0-star reviews and positive feedback around usability and practical store value.

Outcome

This project showed how AI can be applied in Shopify in a practical, revenue-aware way - not as a gimmick, but as an operational workflow that supports sales, support, and customer experience at scale.
