The AI against Oil Spills project aimed to revolutionize the detection and management of oil spills in inland ports and waterways, areas where small but frequent spills often went unnoticed due to the limitations of current monitoring methods. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, this initiative sought to develop a model capable of identifying these smaller spills, enabling a quicker and more effective response from inland spill teams to protect water quality. Additionally, the project explored the potential of drones for remote oil spill detection, aiming to automate the process for autonomous monitoring and significantly enhance the capabilities of environmental agencies. A key goal was to refine the calculation of oil spill volumes, ensuring that response teams could estimate the necessary resources more accurately, thus responding to spills more efficiently and safeguarding our waterways more effectively.
