HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED WHEN LIFE FEELS SLOW.
Motivation is not about shouting, jumping, or watching motivational videos every morning. Real motivation is quiet. It is the decision to keep moving even when nothing seems to be happening.
I have learned this from my own life, especially here in Port Harcourt where light goes, plans scatter, and you have to push with what you have. If you are waiting to feel motivated before you start, you will wait forever. Motivation comes after you start, not before.
Here are four things that actually keep me going.
1. Be Contented, But Not Complacent.
Contentment is not laziness. It is peace. Many of us are not motivated because we are always angry at where we are. We look at Instagram, see someone in Lagos or Houston buying a car, and we start hating our own small room, our own slow business, our own daily struggle.
Contentment says: "This is where I am today, and it is okay." Complacency says: "This is where I will stay forever." You need the first one, not the second.
When you are contented, your mind stops fighting itself. You stop comparing. You start seeing the small tools you already have — your phone, your data, your ability to write 500 words, your Spanish, your voice. Those are enough to start. You don't need everything to start. You just need peace with your starting point.
2. Stay Busy, Don't Stay Idle.
An idle mind is motivation's worst enemy. When you sit doing nothing, your brain starts creating fear. Fear of failure, fear of what people will say, fear that you are behind.
But when you are busy, even with small things, your brain has no time to fear. Busy does not mean stress. It means movement. Wash your clothes, rearrange your table, write 200 words, message one client, learn one Spanish word, clean your gallery. Movement creates momentum.
In PH, we say "water no dey stay one place." If you keep moving, you will not smell. If you keep doing, you will not sink. Don't wait for big motivation. Do small tasks daily. The small tasks pile up and before you know it, you have built a week, a month, a business.
3. Get Better At What You Love.
We all have something we love doing that we do not take seriously. For me it is writing. For you it might be selling, talking, cooking, fixing phones, braiding hair. Motivation dies when you do what you hate every day.
But when you spend even one hour daily getting better at what you love, you feel alive. You don't need to be perfect. Just be 1% better today than yesterday. Read one page about it. Watch one tutorial with your data. Practice with your phone. Write one paragraph.
The day you start improving at what you love, you stop begging people to motivate you. The skill itself starts motivating you because you see growth.
*4. Appreciate Yourself Daily, No Matter How Small.*
This is the most important one. Most of us wait for someone to clap for us. Nobody will.
Appreciate yourself daily, even if you only achieved one thing. Did you wake up early? Appreciate it. Did you write 100 words? Appreciate it. Did you save ₦500? Did you download the apps I told you? Did you not give up today? That is achievement.
Talk to yourself like you talk to your best friend. Say "I tried today. I am proud of myself. Tomorrow I will try again." That small self-appreciation builds a kind of inner strength that no light, no NEPA, no client can take from you.
Slow progress is still progress. Little achievement is still achievement. As long as you are moving, you are not failing.
Stay contented. Stay busy. Get better at what you love. And clap for yourself daily.
That is how you stay motivated.
