How to make your headphones sound better, for free!

Listening to your favorite artist’s new album after a long day of work sounds great. But what about your headphones or earphones, how do they sound? No matter which headphones or earphones you use there are a couple of well-known tricks we can use to make them sound better than before, and for free!

Making the decision

Sometimes even turning up the volume might not be enough to feed the impact of the bass you desire, or lowering it so those ear-scratching high-pitched noises don’t bother you as much. If you haven’t thrown them away yet or given them to your parents, give them a second chance by following our guide.
If you would rather get better headphones, click here to see our guide on which headphones to buy, and come back here again to make them sound even better!

Improvements to be made free

Using equalizers is the most common way to change how an audio system sounds. Whether it is the sliding switches on your parents’ old speaker set or a setting inside your phone somewhere we have different ways of adjusting frequencies to our liking.
Understanding which settings to adjust, and what frequency the things we hear belong to can make this challenging for anyone. You might want to hear your favorite singer’s voice more than the drums but where would those sounds even be on the frequency graph? What about other songs? They probably have different instruments and singers too. Even if we decide on the frequency range, how much we should adjust it? Where can we even find these settings?
Luckily you don’t need to know all these things about frequencies and graphs to get started! Wavelet is an app that already has prebuilt EQ settings for headphones! All you need to do is download the app, type in the model of your headphones and the app handles everything for you.
“With over 3400 precalculated optimizations for headphone models and many options for customizability, Wavelet is a great addition to any mobile audio setup.” -Wavelet’s Play Store Description
At the moment wavelet is only available on Android phones so iPhone users will need to wait for future updates on the company’s direction. If you want to hear about this along with many other audiophile news, click here to subscribe to our mailing list.

But how does it make it sound better?

We all have different preferences when it comes to sound. We listen to different kinds of music, we may enjoy the rumbles of the bass or the beauty of vocals. Then how does an app know what we like?
The app makes use of the Harman Curve, which is the result of research that aims to find how headphones should sound like have a tonally balanced sound. The app then combines this information with its database of frequency graphs from a wide range of headphones and earphones to make the required adjustments. And all you need to do is type in the model of your headphones.
Once you open the app, connect your headphones to your phone via cable or Bluetooth. If the connection was successful you should see the “AutoEq” setting on top of the app. Simply

What is the next step?

Now that you are intrigued by the world of equalizing, let’s take a look at what you can do next to make them match your taste.
As we said before, Harman is the average of all listeners so in this step we will make some small adjustments to make it personalized.
Listen to your favorite tracks and see if there are things you would like to hear more or less.
This graph can help you identify which frequency range you should adjust according to what you hear.
The key to adjusting these frequencies is to try decreasing values more often than increasing them. You can think of it negatively, if you want more bass, lower the rest of the values by a bit. If you want more treble, lower the bass, and so on.

Is Wavelet available on PC?

Wavelet is currently exclusive to the Android platform.
If you are looking for a similar application that has easy-to-use prebuild profiles, Equalizer Apo with Peace GUI offers the best features with a simple user face.

How to use Peace GUI

The first step is to download and install Equalizer Apo. This is the most commonly used, open-source equalizer for Windows.
After you follow the in-app steps to finish downloading, we need to install Peace GUI to have an easier, more convenient user interface that also happens to have a similar auto-equalizing feature, like the one found on Wavelet.
Upon opening Peace GUI you will see the premade graphs on the left side, the frequency adjustment menu in the middle, and many more settings which we won’t dive into now.
At the bottom right side of the frequency adjustment tool you should see an AutoEQ button. Clicking it will forward you to the database where all the premade EQ settings are stored. Simply search for the model you use, click apply, and use the time you saved using these steps by enjoying your favorite tracks like you never heard before!

It sounds great, doesn’t it?

“Wow, I have not expected it to affect the sound so drastically!” A. Huntsman on Reddit.
Don’t just take our word for it, see what the users thought of it. With all the positive reviews it has, and the improvements it offers, and on top of it all, not having to pay a cent to achieve it, the question we have is why you haven’t tried it already. Click here to download the latest version of Wavelet, or here to download Equalizer APO to start enjoying music like you haven’t before.
