A clean close isn't about

A clean close isn't about speed. It's about doing the same steps, in the same order, every month.
Here's my workflow:
Transactions → Reconciliation → Adjustments → P&L/BS → Review → Management commentary
1. Transactions I make sure every bank, card, sales, and purchase transaction is recorded and coded correctly in QuickBooks, Zoho Books, or Xero. Nothing is left in suspense.
2. Reconciliation Bank, credit card, receivables, payables, and VAT accounts are matched to statements and supporting documents. Unmatched items get cleared or explained, never ignored.
3. Adjustments Accruals, prepayments, depreciation, payroll, and any correcting journals are posted with clear descriptions and backup, so the numbers reflect the period and not just the cash movements.
4. P&L / Balance Sheet I generate the statements and confirm the trial balance agrees and the balance sheet balances. The two reports must tell one consistent story.
5. Review I compare against last month and the same month last year, and I dig into anything that moved unexpectedly. Every big variance gets an answer.
6. Management commentary Numbers alone don't help a founder. I add a short summary of what changed, why it changed, and what needs attention next month.
Why this order matters: each step protects the next one. Skip reconciliation and the statements can't be trusted. Skip review and the commentary can't be trusted.
A consistent close means fewer surprises, faster reporting, and clients who always know where they stand.
What's the one step in your close that always takes longer than expected? 👇
