Following my research document, where I delved into movie posters, I wanted to create my own alternative posters for an existing form of media. This could be film, television, radio, print, etc. These posters need to have a component which links them to create a set, while still being understood on their own.
I was inspired by different alternative posters through their design, colour, composition and other elements. One of the easiest and fastest ways in giving a viewer a quick snapshot of an important moment or the general premise of an episode is through a character quote. The range of illustrations and art styles was also something that attracted me to alternative posters rather than official posters.
I decided to base my alternative posters on a TV show that was quirky and experimental. This was to allow me to create posters that were unique in the messages/ plot they conveyed. After some consideration I chose the cult-hit show "Community". It aired from 2009 - 2015 for 6 seasons. Over the span of its release, it received critical acclaim for it meta-comedy and pop-culture references, using genre troupes and clichés while still keeping continuity between character developments and previous plot-lines.
To start I refreshed my memory on the episodes I was creating for, so, I jotted ideas down with pen and paper while watching them to note down any important scenes or developments that would work for my posters. I planned what I expected my posters to look like by sketching incredibly rough and simple drawings. The idea was all about quantity rather than quality and from there I decided what were the best ideas.
After looking at what elements worked and what didn't it became clear which ideas I was leaning towards. One of my favourites was characters quotes. This seemed to crop up in almost all rough sketches I did, so, I decided to include them on every poster as a way of unifying them and clearly marking them as a set. I also liked the idea of having the episode title and season/episode number in a thin white border as another way of linking them.
