Genetic diversity in endangered organisms

2. WHAT IS GENETIC DIVERSITY? The variety of genes or inheritable characteristics present in a population. German Shepherd Beagle Rottweiler 1.
3. What are endangered species and its relation with genetic diversity? • Plants and animals species which are in danger of Extinction are called Endangered species. • Endangered species with low genetic diversity may have extinction risk. 2.
4. GENETIC DIVERSITY CAN BOTH BE A CAUSE AND REMEDY. 4 3/12/2020 Add a footer 3.
5. “Importance of genetic diversity in endangered species” • Allow individuals to adapt different changes. • High genetic diversity increases ability of populations and species to survive major changes in their environment. • High genetic diversity avoid inbreeding or disease epidemics. 5 3/12/2020 Add a footer 4.
6. HOW GENETIC DIVERSITY CAN CAUSE A SPECIE TO BECOME ENDANGERED? 6 3/12/2020 Add a footer 5.
7. Few examples are given below: 1. MACAW 2. PANGOLINS 3. REFLISIA FLOWER 7 Add a footer 6.
8. 8 3/12/2020 Add a footer NAME: JMACAW THE VIBRANT COLOR AND PATTERN OF THEIR FEATHERS MAKE THEM A POPULAR SPECIES IN THE ILLEGAL PET TRADE. 7.
9. 9 3/12/2020 Add a footer NAME :PANGOLINS SCALY FROM TIP TO TAIL AND CAN CURL INTO A BALL CAUSE:FOR THEIR MEAT, CONSIDERED A DELICACY ON VIETNAM AND CHINA AND THEIR SCALES, BELIEVED TO HAVE HEALING POWERS 8.
10. 10 3/12/2020 Add a footer NAME: RAFFLESIA FLOWER aka CORPSE FLOWER IT GROWS 3 FEET IN DIAMETER, AND WEIGHS UP TO 24 POUNDS. HAS A PUNGENT ODORS OF DECOMPOSING FLESH CAUSES: ETHNOBOTANICAL COLLECTING. 9.
11. How introducing genetic variation can save endangered species? • Genetic Rescue Experiment • Performed by US Fish and Wildlife Service and Researcher team in 1995 • Example : Florida panther. 11 3/12/2020 Add a footer 10.
12. FLORIDA PANTHER • Declining population (12-20) • Inbreeding depression • Abnormal reproductive organ development • Kinked tails and low sperm counts. 12 3/12/2020 Add a footer 11.
13. 13 3/12/2020 Add a footer TEXAS MOUNTAIN LIONS: Also called pumas GENETIC RESCUE: • Introduction of 8 mountain lions to Florida Panther habitat. • Underwent mating process • The new panthers brought with them new gene versions, which help counteract two negative side effects of small population size: reduced genetic variation and inbreeding. 12.
14. 14 3/12/2020 Add a footer • The panther population grew and the next generation appeared free of kinked tails, abnormal reproductive organs and other signs of inbreeding.. • Now, the population size has tripled and over the past 30 years, the panthers have gotten a further boost from increased legal protection “RESULT” 13.
15. OtherWays you can help endangered species: Conserve Habitats  Make space for our wildlife  Recycle, Reuse and Reduce  Plant native plants that are local to the area  Control introduced plants and animals  Join an organization 15 3/12/2020 Add a footer 14.
16. CONCLUSION: • Our national heritage of biological diversity is an invaluable and irreplaceable resource. Our quality of life and that of future generations depends on our preservation of plants and animals species. • More knowledge of complete ecosystems can help us to better understand and protects the requirements of all life including the human species. • Endangered means there’s still time but extinction is forever. ‘ Each and every animal on earth has as much right to be here as you and me’ 16 3/12/2020 Add a footer 15.

Editor's Notes

How genetic diversity causes a specie to become extinct? Some species posses very rare characteristics and become prominent in people’s eyes. Either because of their aesthetic character , food purposes or medicinal purposes.. because their meat, fur and other parts are very valuable. they start to get hunted and thus their genetically varied characters bring them on the verge of being extinct.
Ethnobotany is the study of the relationship between plants and people (Balick and Cox, 1996). It includes study of the uses of plants by humans and the relationship between humans and vegetation.
Mountain lions inhabit a wide range of ecosystems, making their home anywhere there is shelter and prey, including mountains, forests, deserts, and wetlands sometimes referred to as "the cat of many names.
