The Best Movies And TV Shows Coming To Max In August 2024

Beetlejuice (1988)

Just in time for the much anticipated and long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to come to theaters, Max is bringing the original Beetlejuice onto the platform on August 1. The movie is a paranormal comedy from the inventive mind of Tim Burton and stars Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a recently deceased couple who attempt to stop a living family from moving into their home. Unable to haunt them on their own, they enlist the help of a mischievous and troublemaking demon, played by Michael Keaton.
With Keaton’s more serious roles in recent years, like his award-winning turn in Dopesick, it can be easy to forget just how effective he was with these more comedic roles earlier in his career. Beetlejuice is Keaton’s tour-de-force comedic performance, stealing every scene he is in with his manic energy and wild persona. Burton also creates an engrossing and unique world in both the life of the living and the afterlife. As exciting as the sequel is, it won't be easy to top the original.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

One of Robert Downey Jr.'s big post-Iron Man movies is coming to Max on August 1 with a fun take on a classic literary hero. Sherlock Holmes is directed by Guy Ritchie and sees Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous sleuth. He is backed up by Jude Law as his friend and partner John Watson as the two men investigate a strange case about a murder lord attached to the occult who appears to have risen from the grave.
The big-budget adventure completely solidified Downey Jr.'s comeback from tabloid fixation to the biggest star in Hollywood. Though he has the same charm and humor, Sherlock is a much different hero than Tony Stark and Downey Jr. has a lot of fun playing with the character's eccentricities. He also has tremendous chemistry with Law, with the two actors elevating the material. Ritchie makes for a surprisingly effective blockbuster filmmaker and the supporting cast includes Rachel McAdams and Mark Strong.

Industry, Season 3

Industry 2020 TV Show Poster
Industry has been called one of the most underrated series on television, but season 3 could be when more people start taking notice. The fast-paced finance drama has elements of Succession and Suits but is also its own story with it focusing on a group of young employees within the intense and competitive world of an investment bank in London.
The third season of the show returns with a new Sunday night spot which may help to boost its reception. There is also an exciting new element for the show’s return on August 11 with Kit Harrington joining the cast as a wealthy English lord whose new tech company provides a lot of opportunities as well as questions for the young and ambitious bankers. With Harrington returning to the HBO family, it should bring some more eyes onto the series.

Chimp Crazy (2024)

Chimp Crazy (2024)
A new docuseries from the filmmaker behind Tiger King arrives on Max on August 18. Chimp Crazy is the latest offering from Eric Goode, whose Tiger King became a phenomenon when it aired in 2020. Chimp Crazy is yet another look at the intersection of eccentric people, wild animals, and criminal activities. The docuseries takes a look at Tonia Haddix, whose career of raising an intelligent chimpanzee gained a lot of attention from PETA and the authorities.
It remains to be seen if Chimp Crazy can find the same level of success that Tiger King earned when it was released, but it certainly seems to be in the same vein as that hit series. The show will look at the ethical and safety questions behind the domestication of an animal like this as well as Haddix's deep connection to the animal who they have been threatening to take away from her.

City Of God: The Fight Rages On (2024-)

City of God The Fight Rages On
A long-delayed sequel series to an acclaimed international movie will debut on Max on August 25. City of God was a stirring and impactful coming-of-age story that was loosely based on the life of author Paulo Lins. The movie is set in a poor neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro and follows a young man named Buscape, who contends with the crime and danger of his town as he dreams of becoming a photographer and escaping this life.
More than 20 years after the original movie, City of God: The Fight Rages On continues the story, looking at an older Buscape as he returns to his old neighborhood after realizing his career dreams. As a photojournalist, he begins to cover the impact of the ongoing conflict between criminal gangs and various law enforcement groups. There are many who would suggest the original doesn't need an update, but fans of the 2002 masterpiece will surely be curious to see where the story goes next.
