The University of London Press is an award-winning Open Access publisher of history, law and human rights books.

All their books are available for free and this is very, very cool, but it comes with some challenges.

Context

The Press had reached a milestone half a million title downloads and we wanted to highlight this with a breakdown of our key success metrics... Only, what are our success metrics?

The Fix

Digital books are a relatively nascent part of the product range for many publishers and benchmarked industry standards for what success looks like do not currently exist.
I know what you're thinking. This is great! We have free reign in how we interpret and convey stats to our stakeholders and peers!
Well, yes, but equally therein lies the problem. How do we show and prove that x = good? Without benchmarking everything becomes an achievement! It was clear that we had to reconfigure the meaning of success for these new digital products beyond traditional KPIs.
Reader reach is a universal sign of engagement- albeit largely seen as a 'soft' altmetric.
I knew I wanted the video to be fun and personable for everyday social media users to engage with passively online, promote our title range whilst also demonstrating that our books had real-world useability and impact for stakeholder purposes. Getting an insight into who our readers were seemed like the perfect solution.
I set about pulling information about what books our readers were reading in what countries with some fascinating and surprising results...
