This project came from D.L. Hughley’s short-lived CNN series, where I played a disgruntled superhero—widely recognized, but with no real superpowers. The character was written the day before the shoot, and D.L. personally asked me to take on the role after we finished writing the sketch.
What I enjoyed most was the freedom to explore the character. D.L. created an environment that was supportive and generous, allowing me to bring my own voice and timing to the performance. Playing a superhero who’s frustrated, overlooked, and self-aware was both comedic and oddly grounded.
D.L. Hughley was kind, collaborative, and genuinely encouraging. He trusted me to “go shine,” which made the performance stronger and more confident. It was a great reminder of how powerful creative trust can be.
These experiences allowed me to move beyond a single role. While writing is often where the job ends, at VH1 and CNN, I had the opportunity to write, perform, produce, and co-direct—bringing ideas to life from concept to execution.
