Challenge
Compose a cohesive original soundtrack for a narrative-driven fantasy game that gradually reveals a psychological twist.
The music needed to:
Reflect the protagonist’s shifting mental state across three levels (Castle, Garden, Forest).
Create emotional empathy without justifying her actions.
Support stealth, puzzle-solving, and chase mechanics dynamically.
Maintain thematic cohesion while evolving stylistically.
Subtly foreshadow the final revelation without making it obvious.
The main difficulty was designing a score that transitions from fantasy to psychological tension to raw survival — without feeling like three unrelated soundtracks.
Solution
I created a thematic score built around a central leitmotif that evolves throughout the game.
The musical progression mirrors the protagonist’s psychological descent:
Intro: Emotional identity and subtle instability.
Castle: Structured illusion and magical fantasy.
Garden: Fracturing perception and rising anxiety.
Forest: Physical survival and collapse of illusion.
The same core motif appears in each level, but transformed:
As melody in the intro.
As harmonic structure in the castle.
As prolonged tension in the garden.
As rhythmic obsession in the forest.
This approach ensures narrative cohesion while allowing each level to feel distinct.
Process
Pre-production
Defined the emotional arc of the story and mapped musical intensity to narrative progression.
Identified three key musical pillars:
Melody (identity)
Harmony (illusion)
Rhythm (survival)
Established a core motif in A minor that could be reinterpreted across different textures and tempos.
Analyzed gameplay pacing:
Puzzle and stealth sections require atmospheric tension.
Chase moments require rhythmic escalation.
The final level demands physical urgency over harmonic beauty.
Composition
Intro Theme
A piano-led composition introducing the protagonist’s emotional core.
Sparse phrasing and unresolved harmonic tension subtly hint at instability.
Castle Theme
Arpeggiated piano patterns and celesta create a magical illusion.
Warm string sustains reinforce fantasy structure.
Threat layers are added dynamically through low pulses and pizzicato strings.
Garden Theme
Reduced harmonic stability.
More space, longer dominant tension, and fragile piano phrasing.
Extended unresolved chords generate psychological discomfort.
Forest Theme
Harmony becomes simplified.
Rhythm becomes dominant.
Kick pulses resemble a heartbeat.
The piano motif transforms into repetitive, obsessive patterns.
String tremolos create physical anxiety rather than emotional depth.
Dynamic layers were designed to activate during enemy proximity, increasing urgency without changing the underlying harmonic identity.

Produced and mixed in a digital audio workstation using a hybrid orchestral setup:
Piano as emotional anchor.

Celesta for fantasy elements.
Low percussion and pulses for physical threat.
Automation was used extensively to shape dynamic contrast between exploration and chase states.
Special attention was given to:
Frequency space to prevent overcrowding.
Subtle crescendos and diminuendos for psychological realism.
Textural layering to simulate mental instability.
