uobarthistory on May 13, 2023: “Calling all prospective students! Have you heard about The Barber Institute of Fine Arts? This stunning grade I listed art deco building is located at the east gate of the university, and it’s an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in art and music! Inside The Barber, you’ll find a Music Hall, Shop, Cloakroom, Lecture Theatre, Photography Room, Print Room, The Gallery, File Room, Library & Study Spaces, Offices, and even Yoga in the gallery! Plus, there’s a large foyer with seating and friendly staff to help you out. Best of all, it’s free for students! But that’s not all - The Barber has a rich history too. It was opened by Queen Mary in 1939 and was the first building purpose-built for the study of art history. It was set up by Martha Constance Hattie Barber in memory of her husband Henry Barber, “for the study and encouragement of art and music.” The works on display span seven centuries and are arranged in four galleries in chronological order. You’ll see works from Botticelli and Bellini through Gainsborough, Gaugin, and Van Gogh to Manet and Magritte. Plus, the current director Dr Jennifer Powell is herself a history and history of art scholar who completed her master’s and doctorate at the university. Make sure to visit The Barber when you’re on campus - there’s so much to explore and enjoy! And don’t forget to check out “Information & Refreshments” for news articles, the Birmingham art map (birminghamartmap.org), and advertisements for music, coffee, tea machines, and more arts in Birmingham. C. Capewell The Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies was established in 1990 and it has grown steadily in staff and student numbers since then. Teaching takes place in the Barber Institute. This houses an excellent and representative collection of post-medieval European art. The Department is recognised internationally for both its high level of student satisfaction and the quality of its research output. Its social media accounts are run by students of the course. #historyofart #arthistory #uob #birminghamuni #universityofbirmingham #barberinstitute”.
