“The Weight of Loss" is a mixed-media assemblage installation that grapples with the artist's Solastalgia. Solastalgia is a melancholic disorientation caused by the environmental degradation of a once-familiar place. This piece acts as a ritualistic attempt to preserve a fading environment, case being a park in which the artist has spent most of her childhood. Natural found objects, irrevocably altered by human impact, intertwine with discarded man-made objects. This combination attempts to embody Timothy Morton's Ecological Thought, highlighting the interconnected web of life. Ecocritical text embedded within the canvas serves as a grieving voice, urging viewers to confront the impermanence of the natural world and our role in its transformation.
Accompanied with the assemblage is this silent experimental video that portrays the artist’s grief of losing a childhood comfort place to human activity that has caused environmental damage over the years. The video, intended to unfold like a visual poem, is a series of still clips juxtaposed between the park's present state and the artist's focused creation of the artwork. Subtitled text emote a narrative of loss and longing, on place and change.
