In February 2016, K and her daughter entered the United States in search of a home. K left an abusive partner in Honduras who shot her in the head, but retained complete immunity as a member of the military.
K thought the U.S. would be a place of safety. It was not.
K was immediately caught in El Paso and placed in a series of immigration detention centers. Because her entry was characterized as a crime, she was separated from her daughter.
K began the asylum process alone. Her only priority was seeing her daughter again.
The Artivist’s Studio and Lion Party Films embody K’s story in the upcoming Movement Film, “Descent.” The ghungroo (bells) — inextricably tied to the dancer’s identity — symbolize K’s daughter, without whom K is not whole.
