Laurence Touitou
Laurence Touitou, a visionary and trailblazer in the music industry, played a significant role in shaping the rise of Hip-Hop culture in France. Her journey started in New York, where she discovered the transformative power of Hip-Hop, and eventually led her to become the future boss of the renowned record label, Delabel. This article delves into Laurence's remarkable story, highlighting her encounters with influential figures in the Hip-Hop scene and her impact on the industry.
Laurence's love for Hip-Hop was ignited when she met the legendary Afrika BamBataa in New York. Inspired by his passion and talent, she immersed herself in the Hip-Hop culture, embracing the music, dance, art, and philosophy it represented. Her dedication to the movement was evident when both Laurence and Sophie Bramly were named Zulu Queens by Afrika Bambaataa himself, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the Hip-Hop community.
Returning to France, Laurence continued her quest to propagate Hip-Hop culture. At the radio station Radio 7, she had the fortuitous meeting with Sidney Duteil, a talented DJ. Recognizing his immense potential, Laurence connected Sidney with Clémentine Célarié, who was captivated by his mixing skills while he performed at the infamous club L'émeraude. Impressed by his talent, Clémentine suggested Sidney to Marie-France Brière, a film producer at TF1, ultimately leading to his breakthrough opportunity in the entertainment industry.
Laurence's passion for Hip-Hop and desire to showcase its culture urged her to create a television show that would bring the movement into the mainstream. With a clear vision and determination, she developed a show that aimed to introduce the French audience to the vibrant world of Hip-Hop. Unfortunately, the program faced several challenges, and despite its potential, it was discontinued after just a month from January 15th to December 19th, 1984.
Although the television show had a short lifespan, Laurence's impact on the Hip-Hop scene in France cannot be overlooked. Her efforts to promote and popularize the culture laid the groundwork for the future growth and acceptance of Hip-Hop nationally. Her relentless pursuit to give a voice to the marginalized and showcase Hip-Hop's transformative power played a pivotal role in shaping the genre's trajectory in France.
Laurence Touitou's journey from her encounter with Afrika BamBataa in New York to her role as the future boss of Delabel Records is a testament to her commitment to Hip-Hop culture. Through her influential encounters, creation of a television show, and unyielding passion, she left an indelible mark on the French music industry. Laurence's pioneering spirit continues to inspire and resonate, reminding us of the power of determination and dedication in shaping cultural movements.
