Experience as Musical Director and Dance Captain 🎶✨

Nienke van Horen

As both a Musical Director and Dance Captain, I’ve gained extensive experience in leading and supporting performers to consistently reach their highest potential. In these roles, I took on responsibility not only for my own performance but also for nurturing the quality and cohesion of the entire cast.

In addition to performing as the lead singer, I was responsible for maintaining the vocal quality of our entire show ensemble. I closely monitored each performance, recording and reviewing specific points like pitch, harmony balance, timing, pronunciation, and articulation. Based on my observations, I scheduled targeted rehearsals to address these areas, often resolving issues with brief feedback or in-depth practice sessions.
Sound quality was another essential focus of my role. 🎛️ I led sound checks and coordinated with our sound technician to ensure optimal sound for both the performers on stage and the audience. When working with our live band 🎹🥁, I conducted rehearsals to finalize tempos, dynamics, and cues before each show. If any adjustments were needed, I guided the singers and band members through the necessary changes, ensuring we delivered our best every time.

Originally, a colleague held the position of Dance Captain. When she had to step down due to injury, our Creative Director offered me the role. Despite initial doubts (as I don’t identify as a dancer), he reassured me that my leadership skills were the true asset needed. Embracing the challenge, I developed and documented clear cut-show schedules 🗒️ to prepare our team for last-minute adjustments, especially during a busy winter season when cast members were frequently out sick.
Throughout the season, I maintained high standards by assessing show recordings 📽️ and refining performance quality as needed. Later, we had additional performances with a new cast of mostly circus artists 🎪 with limited dance experience. I was responsible for teaching them the choreography in a short timeframe, guiding them through the routines, and being available for any support they needed.
What I’ve Learned Through These Experiences 🌟
- Leadership – I’ve learned to lead by example and empower others to reach their best. 🙌
- Positive Energy – Bringing an uplifting and supportive energy into the room directly impacts both the quality of the performance and the performers’ self-confidence. 😊
- Adaptability – There’s no one-size-fits-all approach for individuals or team dynamics. I’ve learned to communicate openly and invite two-way feedback 🔄 to ensure everyone feels heard and valued.
- Teamwork is Essential – Even as a leader, I’ve found that teamwork is the foundation of a successful performance. When we co-create, magic happens. 💫
- A Keen Eye and Ear – Through observing countless performances, I’ve developed an instinct for what resonates both on stage and with audiences, which helps me make impactful choices in vocal and performance coaching. 👂👀
In both roles, I balanced performance quality with team leadership, consistently aiming for excellence. This experience directly supports my work in vocal empowerment coaching, as I’ve developed a nuanced understanding of vocal performance, teamwork, and the power of clear, confident leadership in bringing out the best in every performer.
