Clinical Reflection on Patient-Centered Care: Managing Postoperative Deterioration
Introduction
This reflection explores a critical incident involving a deteriorating postoperative patient. Applying the Gibbs Reflective Cycle, it considers my actions, the rationale behind them, and the personal and professional lessons learned.
Overview of the Incident
During a surgical placement, I was assigned to a 73-year-old patient who had undergone major abdominal surgery. While monitoring his condition, I observed signs of deterioration, restlessness, elevated respiratory rate, and increased oxygen requirement. I escalated my concerns using the SBAR tool and collaborated with the senior nurse and medical team to initiate early intervention.
Reflection and Analysis
Using Gibbs' model, I evaluated my initial hesitation, emotional responses, and clinical judgment. I recognized that while I followed procedure, I lacked confidence in escalating immediately. With supervision and support, I improved my clinical reasoning and recognized how timely action prevents adverse outcomes. The experience emphasized the importance of teamwork, patient-centered communication, and ongoing clinical education.
Conclusion
This incident highlighted the importance of effective communication, structured escalation, and reflective practice. It contributed significantly to my development as a healthcare professional, improving my confidence and patient assessment skills.
