'Sex Sells': Exploring Visual Tactics in Media Reporting
"Sex Sells": Interrogating the Male Gaze in Conflict Reporting.
Inspired by a research paper we studied during college, ‘Sex Sells’ interrogates how women are positioned as visual bait in newsrooms to capture a male gaze—even when the story is blood, conflict, and loss. One line from that class still sends a shiver down my spine:
The sight of a beautiful woman reporting makes the sight of body bags tolerable.
Design Strategy
The Intent: I used a soft, light pink background contrasted with a bold, sensual element to intentionally mimic the "bait" described in the research.
Typography: The placement of "Sex" on top and "Sells" below creates a direct, unavoidable focal point that forces the viewer to confront the commercialization of the subject matter.
The Goal: To demonstrate how visual elements can be used to either uphold or critique societal standards in media.
