Section 3: Let’s See a Short Story Behind Laundry problem to the Terrace.

Radha’s mornings started peacefully with laundry in her bathroom. But as the day went on, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law took over, turning her bedroom into a noisy, crowded space and also baby gets disturb.

To fix this, Radha and her husband bought a movable stand for the washing machine, thinking they could move it as needed. But the idea quickly seemed risky — what if the kids played with it and the machine fell down the stairs? After discussing a long conservation with family we moved the washing machine to the terrace, but dust and rain became a problem. Radha covered it with a waterproof cover and added a sloping fiberglass roof to conserve rainwater. She also replaced clay pots with safer plastic ones. Still, Radha wanted more. She added LED lights, an organizer cupboard, and a retractable sliding roof. The terrace became a favorite spot for the whole family — perfect for relaxing, playing games, or just spending time together. What started as a simple fix turned into a smart, happy space where everyone could connect and enjoy time away from screens, all while staying close to nature

Why Solving This Matter is Important?

Family Comfort: Solving this makes the home quieter and more private, so everyone feels more relaxed. Child’s Well-being: It helps kids sleep better and play without disruptions. Safety: It prevents accidents from a risky movable stand, especially with stairs around. Space Efficiency: It makes household chores easier and keeps daily routines smooth. Reduced Conflicts: It cuts down on family disagreements, leading to a happier home.

Section 4: Lets start with the Solution Journey to a Smart Terrace Area.

I had a fantastic time speaking with five people about their washing machine experiences in the utility area. From daily users to those who use it less frequently, I wanted to dive into their stories — both the positives and the challenges. My goal was to gain insights that could inspire improvements and make their washing machine experience even better!

The journey began with recognizing key issues faced by users with their utility areas- washing machine. Interviews revealed common challenges:

Limited Space: Small utility areas made it difficult to manage washing machines effectively.
Budget Constraints: Many users couldn’t afford significant upgrades or alterations.
Inconvenience: Poor placement of washing machines caused frustration and inefficiency.

Crazy 8 pushes me to think fast, moving past my usual ideas and helping me come up with something new. It encourages me to explore a wide range of possibilities, helping me think beyond my first thoughts. The eight-minute sketching allows for rapid experimentation, letting me test different concepts without overthinking. When done in a group, it inspires others, leading to a unique mix of ideas. The fast pace helps me break through creative blocks, making it easier to keep ideas flowing. It turns my ideas into sketches, helping me see different solutions right away without being perfect on sketch.

Observations from Australian designs and movies highlight effective use of smart sliding roofs in enhancing outdoor living spaces. This exploration helped me refine my ideas and ultimately led me to the final solution.

Section 5: The Secret Ingredients to My Project Success: The Crucial Decisions That Were my Magic Touch.

Every section of this project is important, but this one has a secret ingredient: it highlights the key decisions I made throughout the process. It’s significant because it showcases my thought process and decision-making skills.

In “Change by Design,” Tim Brown emphasizes the value of iteration in the design process. But still I was not to the mark and then my mentor explained and pushed for how about 100’s iteration?

This section will be divided into several sub-sections, each exploring different aspects. Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll find:

I selected this problem area because tackling limited and problematic issues often leads to the most interesting and insightful solutions. By exploring these challenges, I aimed to gain a deeper understanding and learn more through the process.

1. I adjusted my questions after two user interviews, and here’s why.

I’ve always loved the learning phase of user research, where each step teaches you something new. Initially, I went into user interviews with a list of open-ended questions:
How often do you use utility area?
If you could change anything about your utility area, what would it be?
But I found these interviews often turned into simple Q&As. The conversations felt flat, and neither the users nor I were fully engaged.

If users couldn’t remember specific details, I used imagined scenarios to spark their thoughts.

After making these changes, my next three interviews were a game-changer. The discussions were much more dynamic, and users were eager to share their experiences. This shift helped me gain deeper insights and made the whole process more enjoyable for everyone involved
2. Selecting the One Problem Statement from Numerous Options.
I evaluate how each problem affected users’ daily lives and which one had the potential for the most impactful design solution. By exploring many problems in detail, I identified that focusing on the utility area in a common space — beneficial for all family members — offered a more comprehensive and effective design solution. This approach allowed me to address a critical issue that would improve overall functionality and user experience.

3. Simplifying the Final Idea for Effective Prototyping

Evaluating Initial Ideas:

Ideas Considered: Advanced automated terrace covers and multi-functional canopies with built-in lighting and heating.
Challenges: These ideas were too costly and complex for the project’s budget and space constraints.

Prioritizing Solutions:

Criteria Used: Focused on practical, cost-effective solutions that addressed the key issues of weather protection and usability.
Selected Solution: Automatic slides, which provided a balance of functionality, ease of use, and adaptability.

Refining to Detailed Solutions:

Initial vs. Final Ideas: Initially explored complex, high-tech solutions but refined the focus to a simpler, more practical option.
Final Choice: Automatic slides for the Smart Terrace, offering effective weather protection, ease of use with remote and manual controls, and the flexibility to open or close as needed.

4. Balancing Innovation and Practicality in Prototype Development
Excluded integrated lighting and automated sensors due to complexity and budget constraints, focusing on core functionalities.
Limited time and resources necessitated prioritizing essential features like automatic slides, deferring more advanced elements.

The automatic slides work smoothly and fit well with the design thanks to testing and making adjustments.”

5.Iterative Improvements Based on Testing Feedback:
After installing the Smart Terrace Roof, you were excited to show it off. During a gathering, my friend Sahithi asked,

You assured her that there’s a manual control option. Another friend worried about the sheet getting damaged, but you explained it’s made of durable materials, 12 times tougher than toughened glass. Still, wondering — what if it does get damaged?

Yet, you realized that no solution is ever perfect — it’s an ongoing process where feedback and iterations are a constant loop, but in future surely I can work on it for test.

Section 6: Future Plans: How I’d Expand This Project

If I had more time, here’s what I’d focus on:
Integrate automatic roof adjustments based on weather data by sensors to better manage climate conditions.
Add sections for specific activities like gardening or dining to make the space more versatile.
Consider adding solar panels and a rainwater collection system to make the design more eco-friendly.

Section 7: From Challenges to Growth: What This Project Taught Me

Patience and Listening: Being patient and listening to users helped me understand their needs and create better solutions. Managing Time and Priorities: Focusing on priorities rather than stressing about time helped me stay on track and get things done. Importance of Iteration: Iterating designs, as my mentor suggested, is crucial for making improvements and achieving better results. Observing Real-Life Use: Seeing how people use their terraces in various weather gave me ideas for practical features like the sliding roof, enhancing the design’s functionality.

Section 8: Your Feedback Matters — Help Me Make This Better!

As I reach this point in the project, I’d love to hear from you! Your feedback is the secret ingredient that will help me refine and elevate my work. Here are a few sections where your thoughts would be valuable:
Section 1: Introduction: Did the goals and setup grab your attention, or was something unclear? Your feedback will help me improve.
Section 2: Final Solution: What do you think of the Smart Terrace Roof design? Does it solve the problem well, or could it be better?
Section 6: Future Scope: How can I take this project even further? I’d love to hear your ideas for the next steps.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the sections I’ve highlighted, also please don’t hesitate to share any general feedback you might have, even if it’s not related to those points.
