✦ Overview

I decided to analyse the food ordering system at movie theatres to identify areas for improvement. I took this up as a personal project to apply and enhance my design skills.

🔍 Research

Due to COVID restrictions, I couldn't interview theatre staff, so I focused on understanding the food ordering system through customers' experiences. I conducted an online survey using a Google Form to gather insights into their perspectives and challenges.

Here's what users said :

"When an interval occurs a lot of people come out and it creates so much chaos. Also, a big queue builds up in front of the counter. Maybe the increment in the counters would reduce the queue and chaos or if they will take our orders and will say to go on our seats and they will bring it for us would be much easier"
"I don’t like the idea that you have to wait in line in the interval and you have a constant fear that the movie will start and you might miss something. Also, you have to carry the food in the dark place in between people sitting"
"Self-service is time-consuming as there is too much crowd and many times I was late. There’s a service where people come in the hall and take orders for us which disturbs the whole environment inside"
"They ask for so much cost and still we have to go to ourselves to take the food, rather they should deliver it to our seats. Also, we sometimes have to wait to receive food and I hate it when I am hungry"
"We had to wait in the lines for a long time even once I dropped sauce on a person in the line"

🎲 Figuring Out The Actual Problem

Considering both customer feedback and my own perspective, this is my hypothesis:- Previously ordering and receiving were chaotic, But Theatres started delivering food to customers’ seats, and some theatre staff also came to take and deliver orders. But they aren’t delivering for every customer only doing it when asked and cannot when people are standing outside in the lines.

The current system isn’t the efficient for taking 50 (approx) orders, preparing them and delivering to them in limited time of 15 mins interval.

🖌️ Designs

💡 Decided to use the dark theme as the lighting in the movie halls is very dim and it will reduce eye strain.

Quick Onboarding

For a quick onboarding, after a brief about the app allowing login using OTP verification to reduce the time and password hassle.

Food Selection

For showcasing the food items, I decided to go with the tabs as there are a few food categories and it will be an easy and quick way to navigate.
