I was approached by the South Asian Studies Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley to design their upcoming “We Are Hockey” exhibit at the Sikh Heritage Museum. Centred on the experiences of people of colour, this exhibit challenges the linear meaning of “Hockey as Canada’s national sport” while negotiating decolonization, race, ethnicity and the privilege and power of settler communities.” Its aim is to bring to light the hardships and triumphs of each player. The project began by creating a timeline for significant dates in hockey history that involved people of colour. Since the information was telling a story from past to present, I wanted my illustrations to flow sequentially. After creating all the exhibit pieces, such as bio panels, vitrine design and layout. I was to design a catalog that would showcase all of the exhibits information in one piece. The animation was created to advertise the launch of the exhibit. ‘We Are Hockey’ launched on March 29, 2019, and will be open until February 2020.
