The business concept section of the business plan is where you’re going to describe what makes your business unique and worthwhile. This is your first opportunity to pitch your company to potential investors or banks, and it’s really the section where you’re going to be describing the mission and vision of your company, the more strategic aspects of your company plan. It’s also the section where you’ll be telling potential investors and banks how it is you think your company fits into the present environment, i.e. what niche does your company fill. This section is relatively short. It should only be about one to two pages of the total plan. Like the executive summary, you might want to complete this part of your plan after having written most of the rest of it.
Vision of the Company
This section should be relatively short. This is basically your elevator pitch to whoever is planning on investing in your business in whatever fashion. Mine is simply one sentence: “To help small business owners in need reach their full potential.” In this one sentence I encapsulate exactly what it is that my business seeks to provide to my clients.
Value of Services to Clients
In this section you’re going to spell out exactly what it is that your clients will be getting from each of your services or products. You’ll want to list out each of your main products or services, and give a short description of what they are. After that, you’ll describe the benefits your clients or customers will be receiving from your product. Always remember that your products and services should be designed to be client-centric. With that in mind, you don’t want to describe the benefit of a spoon as allowing someone to shovel food into their mouth. You would want to describe it as allowing someone more convenient access to the ability to sate their appetite. The difference is in the focus on the need of the customer rather than on what the spoon physically does. In other words, what need does this product or service fill.
Why your Company is Especially Qualified
Here you want to explain what it is about your company that will help you fill that particular niche that you aim to fill. Do you have certain special certifications, patents, or programs, etc that you feel put you ahead of the game? This is where you should mention that you have them. This section should be about how your products and services are uniquely qualified to fill the niche you are targeting. It’s slightly different than the next section in that you’re talking about qualifications rather than characteristics.
Uniqueness and Growth Potential
As opposed to the previous section, this section is where you should talk about how your company is different than your competitors. What is it about your mission and vision statements that is different than your competitors? Or, if your mission and vision statements are similar, how are you going about fulfilling them that is different than your competitors. Perhaps your focus is more on social media than on your competitors who work more face to face. Perhaps you’re turning what has traditionally been a service into a subscription. These are things that make you unique.
