PAUL
The Concept
I sought to create a piece that departed from the rapid-consumption aesthetic of short-form social content. This is a character study of Paul Atreides, focused on his inner world: the weight of prophecy, the loss of boyhood, and the inevitable transition toward a darker narrative. My goal was to sit in the liminal space before his transformation—capturing a boy being shaped by forces larger than himself.
The Visual Grammar: Why Black & White
I gravitate toward monochrome naturally, but here it was a deliberate narrative choice to represent Paul’s past. By stripping away the chromatic warmth of the original cinematography, the imagery becomes internal and memory-like—focused on the chiaroscuro of his psychological state.
The Score: Liebestraum No. 3
I chose Liszt’s Liebestraum No. 3 ('Love Dream') for its ethereal, prophetic quality. The music’s dynamic shifts—from tender passages to frantic, overwhelming movements—dictate the edit’s pacing. I used these transitions to mirror Paul’s emotional peaks, allowing the music to govern the visual narrative rather than serve as a secondary layer.

Technical Execution Utilizing Final Cut’s blend modes and layering, I juxtaposed multiple frames to visualize premonitions and fears simultaneously. Every cut is mathematically synced to the emotional arc of the score:
Adagio passages: Extended holds and fluid transitions for contemplative moments.
Allegro passages: High-velocity cuts and jarring movement to visualize the crushing weight of expectation.
The Objective This project was an exercise in Visual Musicology. It taught me that high-impact editing is less about 'flash' and more about the discipline of the hold—knowing exactly when to sustain a moment and when to break it.
