Dig or Fly: A Tale of Overcoming Walls

When the walls start closing in you don’t fly away, you start digging.
Dig into your deepest fears to know why the walls closed in.
Dig into your proudest moments to gain courage.
Dig into your core values to help the others stuck with you.
And finally dig into your mind and bury these walls so that they do not resurface.
Be the person who digs not the one who flies away.
Randomly wrote this one day. Shared it with my cousin Anushka Waikul (go check out her substack too).
“Can u also write about how people who fly are sometimes insufferable?” Those were her exact words when I asked her how it was.
I may be being too kind when I say that I personally think people who fly away are simply scared. Scared of the outcomes, reactions, the unbeareable weight of those walls on their frail mind. And if they don’t look scared maybe they’re just damn good actors who have learned to hide emotions behind the countless masks they choose to wear.
Or maybe they’ve never had walls built around them. Their environment is such that has allowed them to go on without obstacles. They’ve never had to burst through closed doors or squeeze through small windows to reach the destination they want. And so, when they see walls for the first time, they freeze. But even then they still have choice.
Dig or Fly.
And then they decide to fly. They decide to make a jump so high that the walls disappear. Alas, they choose a momentary illusion over a lifetime of disillusionment. Because those walls rise and no matter how up you go, the eventually engulf you. The faster one learns to dig is better.
But does that make the flyers insufferable?
Maybe to us. but we have all done this at one or more points in our lives. We all have flown until the walls seem to disappear. So what makes us any different? By us I mean the people who learn to dig and break the walls down from their very base. Because walls are rarely surface level. They run deep into our insecurities and mindsets. And everyone eventually learns to dig.
We all have been flyers at some point in our lives. And while the people with us who avoid and delay the problems may seem insufferable to us, all we can do is be understanding. If that person is close to you… hold their hand and teach them to dig and if they aren’t that close to you…
Let them fly away. Let them…
