The Bio-Threshold

The Bio-Threshold is an intervention that works to heighten and cultivate flora for non-traditional consumption and attempts to connect with nature as a primary remedy against mental health issues that occur as an effect of urbanization, self-isolation, and social distancing. The image of nature enclosed has had a dystopic element to it. At the same time, people will experience a sensory immersion and shift in scale that occurs when they put their head inside. People place their heads inside the Bio-Threshold, becoming part of the landscape and being immersed in the smells and up-close views of the plants inside. The Bio-Threshold re-situates the landscape within the glass case, while also giving the viewer new intimacy with the land. 

When standing inside the Bio-Threshold, the closeness of the plants is matched by a closeness and intimacy to other people that can be alternately comforting and unsettling, especially in our present society which has challenged us to conform to self-isolation and social distancing. This solitude has brought along severe mental issues of depression, loneliness, and anxiety. The plants are selected for their ability to produce the essential vitamins and mineral that are consumed through inhalation. For instance, lavender is used to enhance relaxation and sleep. It is said to relieve headache and migraine symptoms. Lemon is said to improve mood help relieve the symptoms of stress and depression. Eucalyptus can help relieve the airways during a cold or flu.

The plants are housed within the porous structure and maintained by the local community. The porous structure also contains essential oils which are cultivated from the plants and flora and are emitted by steam.  Through Bio-Threshold our very being becomes intertwined with the plant-life around us
