ECO-SORT: A mobile app for office recyling

Introducing Eco-Sort, A smart, app-connected recycling system designed to help offices optimize waste disposal, reduce contamination, and engage employees in sustainable practices.

The Challenge: Recycling in offices remains inefficient and disengaging. While most people recycle at home, the same behavior doesn’t translate to the workplace—only 17% recycle regularly in office environments. Confusion, lack of engagement, and poor infrastructure contribute to contamination and low recycling rates. With new UK regulations requiring stricter waste sorting by 2025, businesses face mounting pressure to comply and act sustainably.

The Goal: To design a seamless, data-driven product and service that improves recycling behavior in corporate environments—benefiting employees, facility managers, and sustainability leads.

The Solution: An integrated system combining a Smart Bin and a companion Mobile App to make recycling in the workplace smarter, simpler, and more engaging.

Research Insights:  -> User research revealed major friction points: overflowing bins, unclear sorting rules, lack of feedback, and minimal employee engagement. -> Market analysis showed smart bins reduce waste collection frequency by up to 90%, yet most offices lack this tech. -> Policy review highlighted how unprepared many businesses are for upcoming legal changes.

Design Process: Bin Ideas

I designed some initial concepts for the bin by sketching them on my I-pad and on paper. 

Smart Bin Features:  -> Fill-level sensors for automatic alerts -> Sorting sensors for paper, plastic, and metal -> App integration via QR or NFC for real-time feedback

App Features: -> Real-time bin tracking to prevent overflow and aid janitorial scheduling -> Visual guides and scanning tools to reduce contamination -> Gamified rewards and progress tracking to boost daily recycling habits -> Admin dashboard for facility managers to access reports and ESG metrics
