5 Things To Remember When Branding Yourself As A DJ

To succeed at marketing yourself on social media, you need to stay abreast of all the trends that dominate the space. In other words, you need to evolve with the technology that we use in everyday life. In case you doubt that, how many successful DJs do you know whose only online presence is on Myspace? Read on to find out 5 things to remember when branding yourself as a DJ.

1. Use Your Facebook Page Sparingly

If you’re a prolific Facebook poster, ration out your posts. Rapid posts can be buried at best, and they’re annoying at worst. The last thing you want is to have people unlike or unfollow you due to perceived spam. If you make ten Facebook status updates a day, it might be in your best interests to cut down your social media activity. Try to save your status updates for promoting gigs and music releases, and scatter in some more informal updates during the week to keep your followers engaged.

2. Speaking of Social Media, Don’t Outsource Your Account

Unless you’re in the same level of fame as Jay-Z, don’t relinquish control of your social media accounts to a social media ‘specialist’. It only takes some common sense and not screwing up to make use of social media. If you can manage that, then great. However, if you can’t trust yourself to not be inappropriate on a night out with your mates, then it might be best to hand over the reins.

3. Don’t Do Anything Dumb On Your Personal Accounts or DJ Alias

Everyone makes mistakes, but making mistakes on the internet might not be limited to just a PR disaster—it can also be a career killer. If you don’t believe us, look into Ten Walls. The Lithuanian producer was shunned by the EDM community after making homophobic comments on social media. He was also ejected from festival line-ups and faced heavy criticism from a number of fronts.
Be careful about what you post online, because it can definitely come back to haunt you. As they say, “Be careful about what you post online. Once it's there, it can be there forever.” Try to keep your social media presence positive, because taking a negative approach will often expose you to attacks and criticisms.

4. Decide Early On Whether You Want to Associate Your Real Name with a DJ Alias/Moniker

There are a number of reasons why a DJ chooses a stage name:
to maintain a separation between private life and professional life
because their real-life name isn’t memorable or conducive to show business, or
they just want a catchy DJ name.
Obviously, you should make sure the name you choose is unique and not already taken by another producer or DJ.

5. Foster Online Relationships As Well As Real-world Ones

Making real-world connections is great for a multitude of reasons, but don’t forget the online relationships you’ll form as well. Part of making your way in the music industry in general is to prop each other up—support new releases, gigs of friends, and just generally try to be positive and helpful when possible.
