Language and Gender Study

Prevailing modern culture has led to new ideas surrounding gender, ones outside of the dichotomy male and female, as gender is no longer synonymous with sex. This larger possibility for identity opens a gate of possibility to those growing up in a technological world exposed to edification regarding gender identity, expanding diversity.

Ownership to a minority group is partnered with discrimination and exile from the majority, children are able to identify a sense of belonging and identity at a young age leading them to feel the detrimental affects of recluse during crucial developmental years.

This new possibility and wide range of gender identity opens potential for unique experiences and thought exemplified by expression to represent how you identify internally with your outward appearance and self.

With such a rapid change in gender expression, a generational divide has been create in an attempt to encourage inclusivity with advanced forms of gender identity. For example, there have been aggressive discussions regarding transgender people using restrooms coinciding with their gender identification, and college professors invalidating their identity by “deadnaming”,the harmful act of referring to a transgender or non-binary person as their name prior to transition, stripping them of individual freedom of expression.This issue is detrimental to one’s personal identity as it denies their fair right to expression. This denial of identity leads to feelings of invisibility affecting mental health leading to extremes such as suicide, alarmingly common amongst transgender people.
