2023 Recap: A Year in Motion

The Brief

Capture an entire year of life, travel, and moments into a single cinematic recap video. Not a highlight reel of the best shots, but a visual diary that tells the story of 2023 from start to finish.

The Approach

Throughout 2023, I shot everything. Trips, daily life, celebrations, quiet moments, all of it. The footage came from three different sources: a GoPro for action and travel, a DSLR for more controlled cinematic shots, and a mobile phone for spontaneous moments.
The real challenge wasn't shooting. It was sitting down with a full year of footage and finding the thread that ties it all together. I spent time organizing, selecting, and sequencing clips so the final edit felt like a story, not a slideshow.

Key Decisions

Multi-device footage, one consistent look: Mixing GoPro, DSLR, and mobile footage meant color grading and pacing had to do the heavy lifting to make everything feel cohesive.
Chronological storytelling: Rather than grouping by theme or location, I kept the edit roughly chronological so the viewer experiences the year as it unfolded.
Music-driven pacing: The edit is built around the energy of the soundtrack, with cuts, speed ramps, and transitions synced to the rhythm to keep the 3+ minute runtime engaging throughout.

The Result

A 3-minute 36-second cinematic recap that compresses 365 days into a single watch. Shot across multiple devices, edited in Premiere Pro, and published on Instagram.
The project pushed my editing skills further than any single-event shoot could. Working with a year's worth of mixed-format footage taught me how to find visual consistency across wildly different sources and how to tell a longer story without losing the audience.
