Brain-Computer Interface for Speech: 3D Animation, UC Davis
UC Davis Health. Their team works on a brain-computer interface that helps people who have lost their voice speak again.
The question
How do you show something that happens inside the brain and inside a computer at the same time, in 30 seconds, so anyone can follow it?
What we made
A 30 second 3D animation of the whole loop, in one continuous shot.
Electrode arrays sitting on the surface of the brain
The signal carried by cable to a computer
The neuroprosthesis turning on
A speaker giving the patient a voice again
Design decisions
We kept the room plain and grey and made the head see-through for a moment, so the eye follows one path only. Brain, cable, computer, voice. The yellow cable is the only bright colour in the frame, because it carries the story.
