Zoom fatigue in language classes

Some recent studies have found effects of Zoom fatigue for Zoom use in business settings during the pandemic, and a few studies have reported analogous effects for Zoom in education. This survey study examined students doing English courses via Zoom during the pandemic, to examine Zoom fatigue effects specifically for second language teaching. Unlike past studies, personality factors were also included in this study. The results indicated that Zoom seemed advantageous for those with lower foreign language anxiety, those who already had friends in the course, those with good technology, and introverts or those who prefer passive learning. Zoom seemed disadvantageous for those with foreign language anxiety, extroverts or those who prefer active learning, those with mirror anxiety, and possibly for some female students (especially those who are more concerned with appearance and related anxiety). These results need to be considered for online classes, especially when circumstances mandate online courses for all students.
