The Vision of Saint John

The Vision of Saint John ca. 1608–14 Inspired by El Greco’s The Vision of Saint John (ca. 1608–14), a surviving fragment of a larger altarpiece, this project imagines the lost upper portion of the painting not as something recoverable, but as something that continued to exist beyond the frame. Rather than reconstructing what history removed, I explored what it would mean for the painting’s ecstatic upward motion to break free of its physical limits. The result is a visual continuation in which the missing half returns as an overwhelming vertical force, transforming the gallery into an extension of El Greco’s apocalyptic vision. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/436576
