My client, a pet store owner, came to me with the idea of creating a card game for dog lovers. The aim of this game is to make communication between people and their pets more qualitative and more fun.
I was excited to take on this project, as here I had the opportunity to act not only as an illustrator, but also as a game creator, fully developing all the rules of the game and describing the game flow.
Also, as an owner of a large and wayward dog, it was very important for me to use the opportunity to help people understand their pets better.
Unfortunately, I often see people who truly misunderstand their dogs.
In the very beginning, after owning my German Shepherd, I didn't understand her either, although I loved her very much.
Then I started studying dog psychology to understand how a dog perceives the world around them.
This helped me a lot to build a proper and comfortable relationship with my dog. I have a strong feeling of wanting to share this knowledge with other dog owners.
I hope I was able to realize this desire to the fullest in this remarkable project.
Below I showcase some illustrations, card layouts, and photos of a physical product that is already being sold in my client's online store
(brunosplacebklyn.com/products/bruno-s-pawsitive-dog-coaching-cards?_pos=1&_psq=pawsitive&_ss=e&_v=1.0).
I am also proud to show a screenshot from this site with five star ratings and nice kind reviews for this game.
My client's idea was to illustrate and describe on cards the process of various commands for dogs.
I suggested dividing the commands into groups: Basic Commands, Advanced Commands, and Fun Tricks. I divided each of the commands into three parts in ascending order of difficulty level of performance. Depending on the difficulty level, players would receive a certain number of points.
I also suggested introducing Action Cards, which make the game more fun and exciting, help the team to gain more points as well as reduce the number of points gained by the opposing teams.
However, the main, in my opinion, my idea was that this game was not created for human players only. The game involves teams made up of different species: a human player and a dog player. Here we consider a human and their dog as a team, which only by working together can come to a confident victory.
When dividing the cards by type, I applied color coding, where each group of cards has its own color scheme.
When creating the box of cards, card back, and promotional materials, photos of my client's dog were used. However, the cards depict different breeds of dogs and people of different ages and races.
I tried to keep the descriptions of the commands short, but at the same time understandable. Part of the command descriptions I made using pictograms.
All illustrations and layouts are created in vector form in Sketch app and prepared for printing in accordance with the publisher's requirements.
