Everyone attempts to budget. How successful are you at sticking to yours? Robbing from one budget line item to cover for an overage in another? What ways do you stretch your budget to get to the end of the month? Saving on groceries is one of the easiest ways to make your monthly budget stretch. Here are top 5 ways to stretch the food portion of your budget.
Digital Coupons
1. Have a store that you regularly shop at? Do you use their savings card to get the best price? Do you have their app or ever log into their website? If so, you probably have access to digital coupons you can add directly to your card to save when you go to the store. No fuss or mess of dragging coupons to the store with you to save. Coupons can also be found with a simple Google Search. Here’s some of the results when I searched Google for grocery store coupons.
https://www.coupons.com/store-loyalty-card-coupons/ - Offers coupons for all types of stores from grocery stores, to Walmart & Target.
https://lozo.com/ - Lozo allows you to easily gather and organize your coupons right from their website.
Lowest Price Guarantee
2. Some stores will offer the lowest price guarantee on items. If you know the price at your regular store and see it on sale at another store, take the ad with you when you shop. Show the ad to the clerk as you check out. They should adjust the price to the ad price at the other store. If you are doing this with several items, make sure you get into a checkout line without a bunch of people behind you. This keeps you from holding up the line. Or better yet, if self-check-out is available, go there and ask the clerk for help. This reduces the possibility that you will be holding up other customers.
Mail Order Coupons
3. Everyone gets weekly junk mail. Do you ever open up those ads and grab the coupon books that are inside? These coupons are also available in the Sunday paper if you prefer to get them that way. This option can be a little more time consuming and requires some good organization (try getting baseball card sheets and a 3-ring binder, then organize them how you want) but can save at the store.
Using Distance to Your Advantage
4. Sometimes that store that is just a mile or 2 further from the one you usually shop at can have a really good price on something. If so, it’s worth the little extra gas spent to go the distance to obtain that item. It’s up to you how much of a savings is needed to make it worth the extra drive (it should at least be more than it would cost you in gas to drive there), but sometimes it can really be worth a little extra effort.
Generic vs. Name Brand
5. Saving on generic versus brand name items is a big way to create savings in the grocery budget. Some items may not taste as good and therefore, may not be worth the savings, but in other areas it can mean saving big. The specific area I am talking about is in the drugstore component of the grocery store. Need headache medicine? The generic brand more often than not has the exact same ingredients in it as the name brand and can be half the price or more. The same goes for vitamins and many other products. It’s worth the savings to try a product and then if it’s not as good as the name brand, you can always switch back next time. However, you might be surprised both at how good the generic brand is and how much you can save by switching with several products.
There you have it! 5 easy ways to make your food budget stretch farther. Some quick fixes, some take a little more effort, but all are guaranteed to knock your food budget down and make those dollars stretch. How many of these have you used and what sort of savings did you see? I’d love to hear your grocery story savings stories in the comments below.
