CASE STUDY: Creating an Apple-Standard Documentary Tribute for Steve Jobs

Client: Apple (Speculative / Independent Tribute)
Project: Steve Jobs 15-Year Memorial Video Tribute
Deliverables: Documentary-style video tribute.
Services & Role: Video Editing, Documentary Storytelling, Sound Design
The Core Idea: When Apple didn’t release an official tribute marking the 15th anniversary of Steve Jobs’ passing, I took the initiative to build one myself. The goal was simple: craft a documentary-style piece that doesn't just replay old clips, but delivers a clear message with a standard of excellence that speaks for itself.

1. The Brief & The Direction

I noticed that Apple didn't put out a tribute video for Steve Jobs this year, despite it being the 15-year milestone of his passing. Instead of letting the date slide, I decided to step in and create one.
I didn't want to make a generic montage with sad music. I wanted to design an edit that communicated a clear philosophy, honored the brand’s visual identity, and demonstrated the level of taste and precision Apple itself looks for in visual work.

2. The Process

Archival Digging & Audience Definition:
Before touching the timeline, I went digging. I reviewed hours of Steve Jobs archival footage, classic Apple product commercials, keynotes, and Apple's own past tributes. I did this to fully understand the tone, the visual language, and exactly whom I was building this for.
Structuring the Narrative Around a Single Core Message:
I used AI-assisted transcription to map out the audio archives quickly. This cut down the time spent hunting for lines and allowed me to curate clips around one defining philosophy: Steve's own words "Everything else is secondary." Every cut, line of dialogue, and beat in the video was chosen to serve that single message.
2.5D Parallax Scene Construction:
For archival sections where only still photographs existed, I refused to drop them onto the timeline as a flat slideshow. Drawing from the workflow I developed on my Tony Elumelu Foundation project, I cut the still images into layered depth planes in Adobe After Effects. By adding simulated camera passes and matching motion to the music beats, flat history became immersive, dimensional footage.
Tight Turnaround Execution:
The gap between realizing Apple hadn't posted a tribute on that day left me with a very tight deadline (less than 72hrs). I relied on a proven framework clear narrative structure, efficient footage sorting, and AE compositing, to deliver a finished, quality edit on time without cutting corners.
Tools Used:
Adobe After Effects (2.5D spatial parallax, camera moves, cleanup), Adobe Premiere Pro (editorial assembly, narrative pacing, audio sync, sound design).

3. The Result

A Cohesive, Message-Driven Film: Built a piece that cut through the noise by focusing on philosophy over nostalgia.
Inbound Opportunity Engine: The video resonated across social platforms, establishing my standard of craftsmanship and becoming a consistent portfolio magnet for documentary-style video editing and motion design inquiries.
Proactive Execution: Proved that client work doesn’t only happen when an inbox pings taking creative initiative and executing at a high standard creates its own momentum.

The Takeaway

An edit is never just visuals on a screen; it delivers a message and gives the viewer something genuine to feel. How well that happens depends entirely on an editor’s willingness to take initiative, dig deep into the story, and do good work.
And I love good work.
