Designing Communication for Collaborative Sustainability Initiatives
Over an extended engagement, I created visual communication for the IDH Life and Building Safety Initiative (LABS) and the IDH Regenerative Production Landscape Collaborative (RPLC). While the two initiatives differed in their geographic focus and audiences, both required clear, engaging communication that could keep stakeholders, partners, and collaborators informed about ongoing work.
The engagement involved designing graphics for programme updates, country spotlights, workshops, safety initiatives, field activities, and collaborative events that supported regular communication on their social networks.
Overview
The Life and Building Safety Initiative (LABS) and the Regenerative Production Landscape Collaborative (RPLC) are two collaborative sustainability programmes that bring together businesses, governments, civil society organisations, and local communities to address complex environmental and social challenges.
I worked closely with both initiatives to create visual communication that translated their ongoing work into clear, engaging content for their social outreach networks, helping keep partners, stakeholders, collaborators, and the wider community informed about programmes, events, workshops, and on-ground progress.
Context
The Life and Building Safety Initiative (LABS) is an industry-led programme convened by IDH that works with brands, manufacturers, governments, and public organisations to improve life and building safety standards across the apparel, footwear, and textile sectors. Operating across India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia, the initiative focuses on creating safer working environments by addressing fire, electrical, and structural safety risks while promoting long-term improvements in workplace safety.
The Regenerative Production Landscape Collaborative (RPLC) is a collaborative initiative founded by IDH, Laudes Foundation, and WWF India. Based in Madhya Pradesh, it brings together public, private, and community stakeholders to promote regenerative agriculture, strengthen farmer livelihoods, restore natural resources, and build resilient agricultural landscapes through long-term partnerships and responsible sourcing.
Although the two programmes addressed very different challenges, they shared a common communication need: translating complex, ongoing initiatives into content that could be understood by diverse audiences while maintaining consistency, credibility, and regular engagement across digital channels.
Challenge
The work of both LABS and RPLC involved a constant stream of programme updates, workshops, stakeholder meetings, field activities, and educational initiatives. Communicating this work effectively required more than simply designing attractive graphics. It required presenting information in a way that diverse audiences could quickly understand and engage with.
The briefs were often concise, evolving, and varied significantly in subject matter. Each communication piece needed to remain visually engaging while preserving the credibility of the initiatives and maintaining a consistent identity across a long-running series of posts.
The challenge was to develop communication that was clear, adaptable, and recognisable, regardless of the topic being presented.
Approach
Rather than treating every post as an independent design exercise, I approached the engagement as the development of an evolving visual communication system.
For every brief, I identified the primary message before determining the most effective way to communicate it visually. This involved simplifying complex information, establishing a clear information hierarchy, and creating layouts that balanced consistency with enough flexibility to accommodate different content categories.
The objective was not only to make each post visually appealing, but also to ensure that audiences could immediately understand its purpose and importance.
Process
Working across both initiatives meant designing communication for a wide range of topics and audiences.
For LABS, this included country spotlights, workplace safety initiatives, standards, educational campaigns, programme milestones, and regional updates across India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia.
For RPLC, the work focused on communicating workshops, stakeholder consultations, field activities, collaborative programmes, landscape restoration efforts, and community engagement across Madhya Pradesh.
Most projects began with written briefs, reports, presentation material, or meeting notes. From these, I developed complete visual assets by making decisions on layout, typography, colour, imagery, iconography, and information hierarchy before preparing the graphics for publication.
Key Decisions
Throughout the engagement, I made all creative and visual design decisions, ensuring that every communication piece remained consistent while adapting to different subject matter.
Some of the key principles that guided the work included:
Designing visuals that complemented the accompanying written content rather than competing with it.
Prioritising clarity over visual complexity.
Building flexible layouts that could support different communication categories.
Creating a recognisable visual language that strengthened continuity across both initiatives.
Balancing consistency with enough variation to prevent repetitive communication.
Outcome
The communication system became an integral part of the ongoing outreach efforts of both LABS and RPLC.
Regular, visually engaging updates helped communicate programme progress, highlight workshops and field activities, and maintain stronger engagement with stakeholders, partners, collaborators, and the broader sustainability community.
The consistent publishing cadence, combined with clear and accessible visual communication, resulted in increased engagement and positive feedback from the teams responsible for managing both initiatives’ communications.
Reflection
Working across two large, evolving sustainability initiatives reinforced the importance of creating communication systems rather than isolated design assets. Every post needed to communicate effectively on its own while also contributing to a larger, ongoing narrative about collaboration, progress, and shared impact.
The experience strengthened my ability to distil complex information into visuals that remained clear, engaging, and relevant for audiences ranging from field practitioners and programme partners to policymakers and industry stakeholders.
