At the heart of skin ageing lies the progressive loss of collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that provide skin with its firmness, elasticity, and youthful bounce. From our mid-twenties onwards, collagen production begins to decline at a rate of approximately 1% per year. This gradual depletion leads to a cascade of visible changes: fine lines deepen into wrinkles, skin begins to sag, and the once-plump appearance of youth gives way to a more hollow, aged contour. Simultaneously, elastin fibres—which allow skin to snap back after stretching—become fragmented and dysfunctional, resulting in reduced elasticity and the formation of permanent creases.
