I was a judge for a series of short story writing contests. There were several rounds, and each round had a different story prompt or trope to use. I (and several others) would read the stories, score the entries, and provide the authors with critiques of their work. Those who won each round would have their stories published in an anthology. In those cases, the critiques would be more in-depth, to help them polish up their stories for publishing.
