HKIA Sustainability Report 2017/18
Planet
Hong Kong International Airport is built to operate based on the business orientation of its partners. As such it has built a network of partners with whom it collaborates with on efforts to moderate the airport’s environmental footprint. HKIA is also in sync with the larger aviation industry to ensure that the aviation industry’s environmental effects are not far reaching on the negative end of the spectrum. Particular efforts have been dedicated towards managing solid waste, biodiversity, energy consumption and carbon output (AAHK 2018). All these efforts are geared towards accomplishing a 2012 pledge to make HKIA the greenest airport in the world (AAHK 2018).
People
In 2018 the airport, in collaboration with over 20 business partners launched the extra mile project (AAHK 2018). The project is aimed at nurturing talent, elevate HKIA and the surrounding community as well as increase social suppleness. HKIA has invested in improving both social and economic growth of the society on matters beyond logistics. Most of these efforts are in the Lantau community but are not restricted to that region. It achieves its commitment to the society by investing in people through training for skill development within the aviation industry. Other skills it invests in are used in facilitating the advancement of local technologies (AAHK 2018).
Profit
HKIA is the leading airline in cargo throughput. It has a slogan of transforming from a city airport to an airport city (AAHK 2018). The goal is to enhance the airport’s significance to the economy of the city. The airport provides employment for many residents of Hong Kong both directly and indirectly. Indirect employment is through accommodation of businesses that operate within the airport’s grounds. HKIA actively contributes to strengthening the economic masts of Hong Kong which are Financial services, tourism, logistics and trade, producer and professional services (AAHK 2018). The contribution is by fostering smooth flow of people and cargo further diversifying the reach of the city’s economic network.
