Hotel Chocolat Tone of Voice Development

Alexander Skeith

When it comes to luxury chocolate, few names stir the imagination like Hotel Chocolat. Their success isn't just built on luscious cacao or ethically grounded sourcing; it's driven by a brand spirit that whispers "accessible indulgence" across every touchpoint. As they expanded their multichannel model internationally, from the velvet-smooth retail experiences in the UK to bold digital-first growth in the US and Japan, a singular need became clear: a consistent, magnetic Tone of Voice that could scale across their entire ecosystem without losing its soul.
That's where I came in.
The Work: Partnering with Hotel Chocolat, I helped develop and articulate their digital Tone of Voice — crafting a verbal identity that would underpin all content across platforms, from product pages and CRM emails to loyalty campaigns and social storytelling. The ambition? To bring coherence, distinctiveness, and emotional resonance to every word, supporting their explosive customer acquisition growth.
We grounded the new Tone of Voice in four pillars:
Smooth and Inviting Language that welcomes without overwhelming, evoking the tactile richness of their products and the easy sophistication of their spaces.
Curious and Creative Reflecting their relentless innovation — from pleated chocolate slabs to cacao gin — through playful, vivid language that sparks wonder.
Rooted and Authentic Never losing sight of the soil beneath the story; respecting the origins of cacao, farming partnerships, and real ingredient sourcing in everything we say.
Ethically Bold Conveying a deep, unflinching commitment to fairness, sustainability, and innovation in ethical cacao practices — voiced with pride, never preaching.
These pillars were carefully designed to flex across Hotel Chocolat's digital ecosystem: tight enough to maintain a recognisable character, expansive enough to adapt to the needs of loyalty emails, global campaigns, social media posts, e-commerce experiences, and partner communications.

Building a homepage with voice and intent

For a brand with a catalogue as expansive—and an audience as varied—as Hotel Chocolat, the homepage needed to be more than functional. It had to feel like a host. One that knew when to step forward with tempting new arrivals, and when to step back and let the guest explore.
My role was to weave in a tonal consistency that welcomed, guided, and delighted without ever overwhelming. Each section was recast as a purposeful moment of engagement: copy was structured to anticipate multiple user intents—from indulgent self-purchases to thoughtful gifting and seasonal discovery. The challenge was to deliver clarity at scale, without losing the brand’s distinct sensuality.

Framing Velvetiser as hero product

Some products lend themselves to storytelling. The Velvetiser demanded it. More than just a hot chocolate machine—the device has gone on to become totemic of the overall brand, as well as a repeat-purchase engine cleverly disguised as a countertop object of desire.
My work helped elevate the Velvetiser from product to platform. Campaigns, landing flows, and refill journeys were underpinned by language that focused on sensory gratification, subscription convenience, and giftability. I helped articulate not just the what and how, but the why now. By fusing poetic phrasing (“melted moments”) with practical reassurance (“precision at the push of a button”), the copy helped turn a one-time purchase into a long-term customer relationship.

Social as storybook: Brand character in every frame

On social, Hotel Chocolat’s visual aesthetic is strong—but to truly deepen connection, the copy had to feel as crafted as the chocolate. This wasn’t about noise or trend-jumping. It was about continuity of character across every touchpoint.
I brought cohesion to a wide range of social formats, from campaign headlines and product spotlights to brand storytelling and behind-the-scenes content. Each caption was an opportunity to echo the tone of voice pillars: Originality, Authenticity, Ethics. Whether celebrating cocoa farmers or teasing a new seasonal launch, my writing bridged the visual and verbal—reinforcing a brand experience that felt richly layered and unmistakably Hotel Chocolat.
