Why I Chose Public Health: Turning Pain Into Purpose

I didn’t grow up dreaming of public health. In fact, I didn’t even know what it was until life forced me to pay attention.
For me, public health isn’t just a career path. It’s the answer I found in the middle of pain.
The Day My World Shifted
One day, I walked into a hospital expecting help and walked out with crutches I never planned for. A medical error changed my life in seconds.
I thought that was the end of my story, until another hit came. I lost my younger brother, also to a preventable medical error. That was when it sank in: these weren’t just “bad luck” moments. They were failures of systems, failures of accountability, failures of public health.
The Turning Point
When you experience loss like this, you either get bitter or you build. I chose to build.
Public health gave me language for my anger and a pathway for my hope. Suddenly, I could see the connections: the importance of safety protocols, the role of research, the way prevention saves not just money, but lives.
It wasn’t just about me anymore. It was about every person who deserves to walk into a clinic and leave better than they came.
Why I Write
I’ve learned that health isn’t only about hospitals, doctors, and prescriptions. It’s also about the everyday choices, systems, and stories that shape how we live.
That’s why I write. I believe stories can make public health real, human, and urgent. Numbers matter, but it’s the stories that move people to act.
Looking Forward
I’m still a student, still learning, still growing. But I know this: my purpose is to use storytelling to strengthen public health. To make sure fewer people live with crutches they didn’t bargain for. To make sure fewer families grieve losses they shouldn’t have faced.
This isn’t just my career. It’s my redemption story.
If you’ve ever felt powerless after a health system failed you, know this: you’re not alone. And maybe, just maybe, your story could help fix what’s broken too.
