But stacking everything into one platform isn’t always a strength sometimes it’s a liability.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
“All-in-one” tools often become jack of all trades, master of none
Abstraction layers can hide what’s actually happening under the hood
Beginners may rely too much on UI instead of understanding real bioinformatics workflows
In traditional bioinformatics (the way labs have done it for years), tools like BWA, GATK, SAMtools are used directly giving full control, transparency, and reproducibility. BioBuntu wraps these tools, which is convenient… but can distance users from core concepts.
And let’s talk scalability
Real-world pipelines in research labs and industry are often built using Snakemake, Nextflow, or custom scripts not monolithic platforms. Why?
Because:
Flexibility > convenience
Control > automation
Understanding > abstraction
Even the project itself is still evolving, with features and fixes being actively updated meaning it’s not yet battle-tested at large scale.
BioBuntu is great as a learning bridge or for quick setups.
