🍸 The Blob Bar 🍸
What started as a simple cocktail builder somehow evolved into a tiny ecosystem of sentient drink blobs.
My girlfriend and I enjoy making cocktails at home, but mixing drinks can sometimes feel like educated guesswork. You basically throw ingredients together and hope for the best at times.
That got me thinking: what if there was a cocktail builder that could help visualize the outcome before you made the drink?
Inspired by flavor wheels used in coffee tasting, I wondered if flavors could be represented as colorful blobs that combined and reacted as you built a drink.
The result became The Blob Bar. Build a cocktail ingredient by ingredient and watch flavor notes, colors, and textures interact in real time. Every drink develops its own personality, tasting notes, serving recommendations, and self-doubt if you overdo it.
The goal is simple: Encourage exploration! Experiment with ingredients, discover unexpected combinations, see how a drink evolves as you build it, and let the colors guide you to flavor town.
And if you create something worth making, you can save it, download it, print it, and take it shopping with you.
🍸 Building The Blob 🍸
Figma Make helped transform a rough idea into a working product and was invaluable from the early ideation phase to the full-fledged design-to-code phase. Claude Code became my coding partner throughout development, helping me iterate quickly and solve problems along the way. Figma Weave helped create some of the illustrations and visual assets used throughout the experience.
The UI, branding, logo, visual direction, and many of the final design decisions were created and refined manually. Rather than replacing the design process, AI gave me more room to explore ideas and push them further.
Ironically, the hardest part was the Blob itself.
An unreasonable amount of development time, and AI credits, went into getting its shape, movement, textures, personalities, and reactions feeling just right. I hope the blobs treat you well.
🍸 Looking Ahead 🍸
Today, The Blob Bar may be just about cocktails. Tomorrow, it could be coffee, tea, desserts, food pairing, fermentation projects, or other flavor-driven experiences. The core idea is there: make flavor more visual, approachable, and fun.
But for now, I'm just happy a random idea that started with homemade cocktails at home turned into something tangible. And my girlfriend likes it, so hey, I already won.
Now it's your turn to see whether the Blob actually knows what it's talking about. 🍸
