Figma Hackathon Terms and Conditions

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS CAREFULLY. BY PARTICIPATING IN THE CONTRA HACKATHON (THE "HACKATHON"), YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THESE OFFICIAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ALL OF THESE TERMS, DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE HACKATHON. THE HACKATHON IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. THERE IS NO COST OR ENTRY FEE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HACKATHON.

These Hackathon Terms and Conditions and License (this “Agreement”) constitutes a legally binding contract between you and/or your team (“You” and “Your Team”) and Contra.Work, Inc. (“Contra”, "Organizer," "we," "us," or "our”) and apply to Your and Your Team’s participation in the Hackathon and access to all materials, websites, and locations associated with the Hackathon, including use of any of Contra and its’ partners and affiliates’ materials, documentations, data, content, or code provided in connection with the Hackathon (collectively “Contra Materials”).

1. Introduction

  • Organizer: The Contra Hackathon (the "Hackathon") is organized by Contra for Figma, Inc.

  • Hackathon Goal: The Hackathon aims to enable participants to learn to create in Figma Make. 

  • Acceptance of Terms: By registering for or participating in the Hackathon, you ("Participant," "you," or "your") unconditionally accept and agree to comply with and be bound by these Official Terms and Conditions, the Privacy Policy [add link], and any other rules, guidelines, or policies referenced herein or communicated by the Organizer.

  • Modifications: The Organizer reserves the right to modify these Terms and Conditions at any time, with the prior written consent of Figma, with or without prior notice to Participants. Any changes will be posted on the Hackathon website. Continued participation after any modifications signifies your acceptance of the revised Terms.

2. Eligibility

  • General Eligibility:

    • Participants must be 18 years of age or older.

    • The Hackathon is NOT open to residents or organizations located in countries or regions: (a) designated by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the EU Consolidated Financial Sanctions List, or the UK sanctions list; or (b) where participation or receiving cash prizes is prohibited by US or local laws. This includes but is not limited to Afghanistan, Belarus, Central African Republic, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Libya, Mexico, Miramar, Burma, North Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Venezuela, Yemen, Crimea, Quebec, Brazil, Italy

    • Participants should confirm there are no local applicable legal restrictions prohibiting this Hackathon or their participation before they participate. If Participant resides in a sanctioned region or region that restricts or prohibits hackathon contests, Participant is ineligible to participate and ineligible to win. 

Team Participation   

  • Participants may participate individually or as part of a team.

  • Teams must consist of a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 3 members.

  • All team members must meet the individual eligibility requirements or the entire team will be ineligible to participate.

  • Each team must designate a team leader who will be the primary point of contact with the Organizer.

Exclusions

  • Employees, contractors, directors, and officers of the Organizer, its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, and immediate family members (spouse, parents, siblings, and children) and/or those living in the same household of each such employee are not eligible to participate.

  • Individuals who have violated any rules or terms in previous events organized by Contra may be deemed ineligible.

3. Registration and Participation

  • Registration Period: Registration will be open from February 24th, 2026  – at 9am PST to March 2nd 2026  at 11:59pm PST. 

  • Registration Process: Participants must register online through the official Hackathon website. All required information must be provided accurately and completely. Registrants must first receive and acknowledge the confirmation email being sent to them once they have been accepted, before they can enter into the Hackathon.

  • Participation Requirements:

    • Participants must have access to their own hardware, software, and Internet connectivity, unless otherwise specified by the Organizer.

    • Participants must adhere to the Hackathon schedule and deadlines. 

4. CODE OF CONDUCT

  • Respect and Inclusivity: All Participants are expected to conduct themselves professionally and respectfully. Discrimination, harassment, or any form of abusive behavior towards other participants, judges, mentors, or organizers will not be tolerated.

  • Originality: All submitted projects must be original work created during the Hackathon period. Pre-existing code or components are permitted only if they are publicly available and properly attributed (e.g., open-source libraries, APIs). Significant portions of the project must be developed during the Hackathon.

  • No Cheating: Any form of cheating, including but not limited to, plagiarism, submitting work not created by the team, or any attempt to unfairly gain an advantage, will result in immediate disqualification.

  • Compliance with Laws:. Participants must comply with all applicable local, national, and international laws and regulations.

  • Data Privacy: Participants must respect the privacy of others and comply with all applicable data protection laws.

  • Consequences of Violations: The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify any participant or team who violates these Terms and Conditions or engages in any conduct deemed disruptive, unethical, or harmful to the Hackathon. Disqualified participants will forfeit any prizes.

5. Your promises regarding participation in the Hackathon:

You represent and warrant that:

  1. You will not to install any viruses, trojan horses, worms, time bombs, cancelbots, or other computer programming devices or routines or malicious code that may damage, detrimentally interfere with, surreptitiously intercept, or expropriate the Contra Materials or any of Contra’s system, data, or other information;

  2. Your participation in the Hackathon will not breach any duty of confidentiality or contractual rights owed to any third party or violate any law, contract, or regulation;

  3. Your Submission will not contain, depict, or refer (explicitly or otherwise) to any inappropriate, objectionable, or unsuitable language, activity, or other content;

  4. Your Submission will not contain, depict, or refer to any content that disparages or refers negatively to Contra or any other person or entity;

  5. Your Submission will not contain any content that violates any law or any third party’s intellectual property rights, privacy, personality, or other rights;

  6. Your Submission will not contain any device or user tracking information like GPS location, device ID, etc., without explicit user approval, or store any personal health information of any persons on any device;

  7. Your Submission is not spam, is not machine- or randomly-generated, and does not contain commercial content designed to drive traffic to third party sites or boost the search engine rankings of third party sites, or to further unlawful acts (such as phishing) or mislead recipients as to the source of the material (such as spoofing);

  8. Your Submission is not named in a manner that misleads your readers into thinking that you are another person or company. 

Your promises regarding third-property ownership in your Submissions:

You represent and warrant that: (i) Your Submission is Your original, work and is developed and for the first time during this Hackathon, and/or that for any part of your Submission that is owned by any third party (including Your employer), you have all required rights and licenses to submit the Submission and to grant the rights you grant under this Agreement; (ii) Your Submission does not violate or infringe the intellectual property, proprietary or other rights of any third party; (iii) third party intellectual property rights are clearly identified by You as well as the applicable terms of license and other details relating to use of same; and (v) that publication of Your Submission or its inclusion in the Contra Materials or other products or services of Contra and any partners or affiliates will not infringe on the rights of any third party. You acknowledge that many Submissions may be developed during this Hackathon and that such Submissions may be similar or identical in theme, idea, format or other respects to others developed in this Hackathon. You acknowledge and agree that Contra, its affiliates and partners,do not have now, nor shall have in the future, any duty or liability, direct or indirect, vicarious, contributory, or otherwise, with respect to the infringement or protection of any copyright or other intellectual property right in or to the Submissions.

6. Project Submission and Judging

  • Submissions must be:

    • Predominantly created using Figma's products and leverage Figma Make

    • Original work, created by you or your team

    • Projects must be submitted by the deadline: March 2nd 2026  at 11:59pm PST

  • The winning submissions will be selected based on one or more of the following criteria:

    • Creativity displayed in the expression and execution of an idea through Figma Make

    • Innovation displayed by a Figma Make prototype of a Figma design file

    • Cleverness displayed through a Figma Make prompt

  • Judging Process: A panel of judges, selected by the Organizer, will evaluate the submissions. The judges' decisions are final and binding.

  • Disqualification: The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify any submission that does not meet the specified requirements, violates these Terms, or is deemed inappropriate or offensive.

7. Intellectual Property

  • Contra and Figma each own, respectively, all title and rights in their respective materials, operational know-how and business secrets related thereto, and to their respective trademarks, service marks, logos, trade dress or service names. For clarity, all Figma intellectual property provided in connection with the Hackathon remains the sole property of Figma.

  • Participant Ownership: Participants retain all ownership and intellectual property rights in their submitted projects and any underlying code, designs, or content created during the Hackathon, subject to the licenses granted herein.

  • License to Organizer: By entering a Submission in the Hackathon contest, Participants grant the Organizer and, Figma Inc., (“Figma”) a Hackathon sponsor, a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, and transferable license to:

    • Use, reproduce, distribute, display, perform, and create derivative works of the submitted project (including code, documentation, and presentations) for purposes related to the Hackathon, the promotion of Figma’s products and services, and for general marketing, educational and demonstration purposes, including but not limited to:

      • Showcasing winning projects on the Hackathon website, Contra website, Figma website, social media, and promotional materials.

      • Internal evaluation and review.

      • Demonstrating the outcomes of the Hackathon to stakeholders.

    • Use participants' names, likenesses, and biographical information in connection with the Hackathon and its promotion.

  • Third-Party IP: Participants are responsible for ensuring that their projects do not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of any third party. If a project incorporates third-party code or assets, participants must ensure they have the necessary licenses or permissions for such use and must clearly attribute all third-party intellectual property.

  • Confidentiality: The Organizer and Figma do not guarantee the confidentiality of any submitted project. Participants should only submit information that they are comfortable making public.

8. Prizes

  • Prize Details: The prizes for the Hackathon are as follows:

    • 1st Place Overall Grand Prize: $50k

    • Excellence in craft: $15k

    • New interaction: $10k

    • Boundary pushing: $10k

    • Reimagining iconic interactions: $10k

    • Fan favorites on socials: $5k 

  • Prize Conditions:

    • Prizes are non-transferable and no substitution will be made except as provided herein at the Organizer's sole discretion.

    • Winners are solely responsible for any and all applicable taxes, fees, and surcharges associated with the receipt and use of a prize.

    • Prizes will be awarded to the winning individuals or teams. It is the team’s responsibility to divide the prize money among its members. The Organizer is not responsible for internal team disputes regarding prize distribution.

  • Winner Notification:
    Winners will be notified via e-mail and announced on the Hackathon website and/or Contra website. Figma may also promote the event, including listing winners, on its website. Winners will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release.

  • Forfeiture of Prize:
    If a potential winner cannot be contacted, fails to sign and/or return any required documents within the specified time-frame, or is found to be ineligible, the prize may be forfeited and an alternate winner selected.

9. Publicity

  • By participating in the Hackathon, participants grant the Organizer and  Figma the right to use their names, likenesses, photographs, voices, and biographical information for promotional and publicity purposes related to the Hackathon, in any media now known or hereafter devised, without further compensation or permission, except where prohibited by law.

10. Disclaimer of Warranty; Limitation of Liability

  • No Warranties: THE HACKATHON AND ALL PRIZES ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

  • Limitation of Liability: TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE ORGANIZER, FIGMA AND THEIR AFFILIATES, SUBSIDIARIES, AND THEIR RESPECTIVE OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS (COLLECTIVELY, THE "ORGANIZER PARTIES") SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, USE, GOODWILL, OR OTHER INTANGIBLE LOSSES, RESULTING FROM (I) YOUR ACCESS TO OR USE OF OR INABILITY TO ACCESS OR USE THE HACKATHON; (II) ANY CONDUCT OR CONTENT OF ANY THIRD PARTY ON THE HACKATHON; (III) ANY CONTENT OBTAINED FROM THE HACKATHON; AND (IV) UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS, USE OR ALTERATION OF YOUR TRANSMISSIONS OR CONTENT, WHETHER BASED ON WARRANTY, CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE) OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY, WHETHER OR NOT THE ORGANIZER PARTIES HAVE BEEN INFORMED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE, AND EVEN IF A REMEDY SET FORTH HEREIN IS FOUND TO HAVE FAILED OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE.

  • Force Majeure: The Organizer is not responsible for any inability to hold the Hackathon, or to award prizes, due to delays or failures caused by events beyond its reasonable control, including but not limited to acts of God, war, terrorism, pandemics, natural disasters, strikes, or technical failures.

11. Indemnification

  • You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Organizer and Figma from and against any and all claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or in any way connected with:

    • Your participation in the Hackathon.

    • Your violation of these Terms and Conditions.

    • Your violation of any rights of another, including but not limited to intellectual property rights.

    • Any project or content you submit.

12. Privacy Policy

  • Your participation in the Hackathon is also governed by the Organizer's Privacy Policy, available at [link to Contra privacy policy] and Figma’s Privacy Policy available at [link to Figma policy]. By participating, you consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described in both Contra and Figma’s Privacy Policy.

13. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

  • Governing Law: These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of California, without regard to its conflict of law principles.

  • Dispute Resolution: Exclusive Jurisdiction: Any dispute, controversy, or claim arising out of or relating to these Terms and Conditions or the Hackathon shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in California.

  • Injunctive Relief: Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Organizer and Figma shall have the right to seek injunctive or other equitable relief in any court of competent jurisdiction to prevent the actual or threatened infringement, misappropriation, or violation of their respective copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, or other intellectual property rights.

14. General Provisions

  • Third-Party Beneficiary: Figma, Inc. is an express intended third-party beneficiary of this Agreement and shall have the right to enforce any provision of this Agreement directly against Participants as if Figma were a party hereto.

  • Entire Agreement: These Terms and Conditions, together with any documents referenced herein, constitute the entire agreement between you and the Organizer regarding the Hackathon.

  • Severability: If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision will be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that these Terms will otherwise remain in full force and effect and enforceable.

  • No Waiver: : The failure of the Organizer to enforce any right or provision of these Terms will not be deemed a waiver of such right or provision.

  • Headings: The headings in these Terms are for convenience only and have no legal or contractual effect.
