Did you know that as much as 40-45% of your AI Engine referrals are buried/hidden in your Google Analytics data?
For those that see a trickle of LLM traffic to their website like I do as a small independent business, this may not be much of a concern for you yet, but for businesses like my client n8n, AI-driven traffic is foundational in their success. With a million plus unique visitors to their website and online platform every week, even a margin of 1% of that user base is significant, and misreporting by such a wide margin could have catastrophic effects.
While building a Looker Studio dashboard to report on AI engine traffic for them last fall, I discovered that GA4 largely ignores raw referrer data when determining what acquisition channel users and sessions belong to, thereby incorrectly designating a massive swath of them to Direct, Unassigned and even Organic Search rather than the Referral channel where they belong.
I was astounded to uncover so many hidden referrals that the actual numbers worked out to be nearly twice what we initially thought they were, boosting a 1% margin of overall traffic to 2% overnight. Joining these castaway referrals with the known, properly attributed traffic in order to produce more accurate reporting for n8n was the kind of exquisite challenge that tickled my brain.
Fast forward to today, and I was able to apply what I learned from that exercise to the creation of my all-new, ready-made Google Analytics AI Referral dashboard, which has joined my lineup of Looker Studio dashboards that I peddle in various online marketplaces (including my own web shop: https://lookerstudiodesign.com).
Since this crowd has an especially keen appreciation for visual beauty, I thought I'd show off the finished product here. 🎉 😊
