AI is eating the AI Engineering Loop.
Every step of it can now run without a human. Ship, monitor, evaluate, improve, repeat. The tools are there. The APIs exist. The loop can close on its own.
But closing the loop fully is a mistake most teams are making right now.
Here's why:
AI agents optimize against whatever target you give them. If that target is incomplete or slightly off, the agent moves in the wrong direction fast. And because it's automated, it does it at scale before anyone notices.
The result is what some are calling "agent slop": AI agents that behave sort of how you want, but users can feel the quality bar is missing. It's hard to explain but easy to sense.
The fix isn't less automation. It's knowing where to draw the line.
What to keep manual:
Reading traces yourself. This is where your real judgment forms. If you only see what the agent flagged, you only see what it already knew to look for. The blind spots stay blind.
Defining what good looks like. No agent can figure this out for you. What counts as a helpful response, what tone is right, what edge cases matter. That context lives in your head and has to be put there deliberately.
What to automate:
Dataset building once you know what representative looks like. Eval runs once your evaluators are well defined. Deployment checks. Anything mechanical that doesn't need your opinion.
The industry is moving toward continual learning systems where most of this loop runs automatically. That direction is right.
But the teams that win will be the ones who stayed in the loop at the right points, not the ones who handed it all off the fastest.
Your judgment is still the edge. Protect it.
