New Lefty Notes. We asked ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity how AI decides which local business to recommend, and all three leaned on the same Google help page, the one about ranking on Google Maps, to say reviews and listings win.
So we put them in The Argument, where their names stay hidden until the end, and showed them our own data. On identity, the AI described our clients correctly 17 times out of 17 when it read the business's own website, and 1 time out of 6 when it did not. On selection, 786 answers to who-to-hire questions in Kansas City came down to the five or six pages the AI read, mostly single pages whose address named the service and the city, and reviews were not what decided it. All three changed their answer, and one of them changed it while saying it had not.
Reviews still matter, just later in the line: across 1,095 answers to questions like "Is this business reputable?", 87 out of 100 talked about reviews, against about 12 out of 100 for who-to-hire questions. The caveats are in the post too: one city, one line of work, not yet published, and our own tool supplied the search results for two of the three.
