Ran a small experiment last week, messaged around 40 small business owners across real estate, fitness, and food, just asking one simple question about how they currently keep track of things. No pitch, no ask, just curious.
Almost every reply said some version of the same thing: "manually" or "I just remember." A few said they have an app or a register but honestly aren't sure it's accurate anymore.
What struck me wasn't that they're doing something wrong. It's that nobody ever showed them a better way that didn't involve learning complicated software or spending a fortune. So they just kept doing what worked well enough, until it didn't.
That gap between "good enough for now" and "this is actually costing me" is quietly where most small businesses lose money without realizing it.

A new tracker built for monarch butterflies weighs about as much as a single grain of rice, and it doesn't carry a battery at all.
The BlūMorpho, 3.5 centimeters long, runs on harvested energy instead, light, motion, whatever's around it to power the signal. Earlier wildlife trackers in that weight class usually force a tradeoff: strap on enough battery to matter, and you've also strapped on enough weight to change how the animal actually flies.
I think about that tradeoff every time a client site ships a dashboard with twelve analytics scripts competing for the same page load. Heatmaps, two ad pixels, a chat widget, three A/B testing tools, each one individually "lightweight," none of them ever scheduled for removal once the campaign that needed them ends.
The data's worth having. What's rarely worth it is the weight it quietly adds to the thing being measured, which is exactly what skews the measurement.
